What Do I Know About the Day?

Back in my secondary school days, my teacher drilled us on a disease called HIV/AIDS. She told us that AIDS was called Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome. According to her, she said that this disease is one of the world deadliest disease. AIDS is an advanced form of HIV and it's victims has little or no chance of survival.

At first, It was taken as a joke but with time, it showed the world that it was no joke. The mortality rate sprang up and caused alarm. That's when the WHO took it upon their selves to notify the world about this deadly disease. 1st December was the date chosen to tell the world about this alarming issue.

How Is It Celebrated In My Country?

When AIDS came to Nigeria back then, it was taken as a joke due to ignorance. But a time came that this underrated disease began claiming lives. Nigerians then believed that this mass death was a result of the anger of the gods. It was purely superstition but it couldn't solve anything. But when the WHO recognized World AIDS days, it eventually came to Nigeria. The government at all levels in collaboration with medical bodies set this day as an enlightenment day. Generally, I'll say that the mode of this celebration is by enlightening.

It's Impacts

The impacts of this celebration is usually felt in both the society and the citizens in these ways:

  • Enlightening the public: One of the key features of this day is the enlightenment aspect. The medical body involved take time in explaining to the members of the public basic things they need to know about this disease.
  • Giving Hope To The Infected: Those who had contacted this deadly disease have this mindset that their life is over. But, by the virtue of this enlightenment program, the patient are given words of comfort. Since this disease can't be cured, they make sure that some medication are given which can increase life expectancy.
What Issue Is Worth Commemorating?

This is something which we see everyday and it's nature. Nature in it's glory provides a facinating view that sometimes marvel me. I think we should celebrate this natural gift. The day I prefer for the commemoration is 30th of November.
