Many Democratic states leaves the choice of making leaders into the hands of the citizens for this reason election was brought to birth.
Election in this context is an act of choosing someone who would lead or will facilitate the machinery of the state. This is often decided by the popular vote of the masses. Elections ought to be free, fair and without violence while properly accounting for the masses vote.

Election In Nigeria

In my country Nigeria, elections is held every four(4) years which constitutes a tenure and every candidate has a maximum of two tenures which is eight years. Speaking from the observations of our last election which happened two weeks ago that was on the 4th march, 2023. We casted our vote for our presidential and senate choice. It was indeed free as every eligible citizen who was qualified to vote and was accredited was allowed to vote for the candidate of his/her choice. But sadly, despite the efforts of the federal government and the Central Bank, the election was heavily rigged and people sold their votes for paltry sums of money.
However, on the bright side, the election was violence free as reports about death and ballot box snatching which has always been a menace in the past years was kept at a bare minimum .

How It is Done

In my country Nigeria, Before the elections are conducted, all political parties must have conducted their primary election and must have selected who would represent them(popularly known as flag bearers). Then campaign begins, flag bearers of different parties read their manifestoes and canvass for supporters. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after having verified each party candidates, fix a set period of time for Voters accreditation and distribution of Voters Card at the voters respective voting or polling unit. The press during this period are always busy as they announce the candidates of each parties and their promises via songs, talkshows or any other means while emphasizing on the need of citizens to acquire their voters card and participate in the election. After the Accreditation period, A day is fixed for the elections and citizens go to their respective polling units to cast their votes. Thereafter, the political candidate with the most vote is declared the winner.

My Thoughts on Nigerian Electoral System

The Electoral system in my country Nigeria is known as the Independent National Electoral Commission popularly known by its acronym "INEC". This body oversees all electoral and voting related matters in my country, it has its head office at Abuja the country's capital. It branches spawns across the thirty six state of the federation It oversees all state related electoral matters and report to the main office.

My Thoughts on The Degree of Fairness and Transparency in our Elections

Sadly Election, in Nigeria is not usually transparent and fair as the masses are always left regretting why they went to vote.
In the just concluded Elections, Citizens everywhere on social media and almost everywhere complained of how heavily rigged the election was and sadly all efforts to express their distaste for the election results prove apportive.
Secondly most people during the election day are swayed by paltry sums of money fo sell their vote or vote who they are not supposed to.

What should be done to restore Fairness and Transperency

The Nigerian Electoral process could be made fair and transparent by:

  • Ensuring we have an Independent Electoral Commission which is free from Government and external influence and it's members should be politically neutral and showing no favouritism to any party or person no matterr what.

  • Ensuring sufficient election material on the said election date and delayed vote counting should be eliminated as vote should be counted right after the elections in front of the masses and not within closed doors.

  • Mass sensitisation on the consequences of Political apathy, selling of votes and Electoral violence.

With this steps taken, Election in Nigeria would be a free, fair, and violence free process.

Nice entry
We all pray for a better Nigeria 😢

@uduak3287, An important step in the elections in your country that there was no violence, although I see that there was fraud because the ruling party rigged the elections and bought votes, as you say, for miserable numbers.

Nigeria is a country that has natural resources and especially oil. Although from what I see in information that I have read about your country, that oil wealth does not go to the people.

They have reason to vote against the ruling party, although those in power never want to abandon something very common in the world.

Thank you for commenting on the elections in your country.

Friend, I take this opportunity to give you an orientation on our platform, it is very important, in addition to publishing, to support other users by commenting and voting.

You can give 10 votes a day and three comments that will help you to be more visible on the platform and possibly other users will also support you.

There is another orientation regarding the images but that will surely be given to you by the community moderators.

thanks for showing up...peace in the midst of storm😅😂😂

The truth is politicians have found a way to always rig elections, suppress voters and buy votes where they can, including buying the officials. it is very painful that this is how people believe that's how politics should be. Hopefully, we will grow as we continue in our democratic journey.

I feel ur pain sister....
We will eventually grow pass this.
let's build our country together.
❤️

It's very funny how people like me who do not have anything to lose from these governments speak out. At my workplace, the Politics that drive on a daily is enough to get used to Nigeria politics. The amazing thing is we always live together and grow the nation together. In the next 100 years, Nigeria will still be Nigeria, there will be no break, no civil unrest, and no lasting agitation, because we cana only succeed as a nation. A good writing I must say.

Well, we do the little we can to grow our country, but as it stands we are almost powerless against these politicians. or is there anything you know we can do 😁😁

As a citizen, nothing, but a prospective future politician, there are a lot that can be done :)

Weldone my friend, I just hope the next four years brings us blessing and hope because there is no place like home.
