Steem greetings to everyone.
Here is my entry for the creative writing contest on Agricultural systems in my local community.

1.) HOW FARMING IS DONE IN MY COMMUNITY;

I hail from the Northwest region of Cameroon, and agriculture is amongst the main occupations for over 70% of Cameroonians at large and contributes enormously to the Cameroonian economy.

The types of farming system practices in my local area include;

a) Pastoral Normadism
This is the type of farming where livestock are herded in order to seek for fresh pastures on which to graze. So, they follow an irregular pattern of movement.
This is very evident in the Bamenda locality, where in the course of going somwhere either by public or private transport, the vehicles have to hault at some point in time for the cattle and normads to have their way.

This system is mostly practiced by the bororos in my community, and they tend to live with their cattle from one hill or land to another, in search of greener pastures.

b) Slash and Burn (ankara) (Primitive Farming)

Most local farmers in Cameroon have a traditional method for maintaining and increasing soil fertility and increasing crop production on small portions lands. They use the ankara system, which consists of gathering and burying organic matter in ridges followed by burning which increases the potash and phosphorous content in the soil. Organic matter is broken down to carbon dioxide, ash, and other residues. This system of farming is only beneficial in the short-run.

c) Commercial Farming
Commercial farming is a type of farming in which crops are grown for commercial use only, i.e. for selling pupose only.
Here, a large capital, land and large amount of labour is required. Machines are used at a large scale.
Examples of the types of crops grown here invlude: rice, irish potatoe, tea, coffee, groundnuts, etc.

  1. TOOLS USED FOR FARMING
    -With the aid of primitive instruments like hoe, digging sticks, and family or community labour, primitive subsistence agriculture is practised on small patches of land.

-Also we have the Ox-plough which is one of the oldest forms of agriculture mechanisation. The plough is attached to the oxen that then pull it. The farmer then pushes the ploughs hoe deep down the soil. The plough digs into the soils as it moves along.

This is commonly used in large scale commercial farming, and more common than the use of tractors since they are expinsive to purchase.

I recommend you complete the Achievement tasks program as well as recommend that you visit Pexels or Pixabay for free images.
Local images from around your community would have given more meaning.
