RISK IN HUMANITARIAN WORK
Hello steem world, I hope you all are doing great. After sharing my experience on what to know about humanitarian works and the importance, today I will share with you the challenges help workers do faced while in the field
Humanitarian stakeholders are adding concern in aspect of current challenges such as food crises, conflict/war, climate change impacts and extreme poverty.
Despite these, help workers face a lot of dangers in the field like violence/conflict, stress, diseases, climate change and their diet(food).
With these conditions, help workers are given little protection while in the field. The reason that drives them to work is because they want to help people in need and this encourages them to expose themselves through dangerous situations.
Base on my field experience, we were constantly caught in between cross fire within the anglophone crises. This was a great challenge because all our lives were as stake.
The terrain we went to was a rough one and demanded a lot of trekking and climbing as we were within a mountainous area and the roads were footpath. We at times trek for more than 6hours from one community to the next. This work demanded sacrifice and energy to reach the needy.
At the field we almost gave up due to the threats from gunshots and wild animals. The difficulties to access other communities and language barriers was a huge challenge thus making our work stressful.
We were more exposed to any type of disease. This was when the Covid started and with that in mind, most of the community didn’t receive us. We slept in bushes, attacked by mosquitoes, had poor drinking water and no medical assistance Incase of any emergency.
Climate with its weather element of rainfall, sunshine and temperatures plays a negative impact on us. The communities were located in hills thus the weather there was extreme cold all times. There was constant rainfall and low temperatures which could help us charge our solar power banks for our gadgets. This made the work so hard since we were using phones for data collection thus we had to stay for some days without working.
Feeding wasn’t left out. All the workers came from different tribes with carried staple food to a strange community with their own food. We had no fruits and the food we manage to eat in the field most of which had negative great impact on us. For example we ate raw washed bitter leave add with salt and raw pepper plus raw red oil as the best food ever.
To conclude, we came to realized that the greatest wealth is to live the life of great service to others. Thanks for reading and we stay in touched.
