DIRECTED WRITING SPOTLIGHT :CULTURE. A BRIEF HISTORY AND ORIGIN OF THE PINYIN PEOPLE.
Hello steemians! Am @paddykam. Accept the warmest greetings from this end. I do hope we all are fine. I wish to participate in the directed writing titled :CULTURE.
I am from PINYIN from NGEMBA ethnic group. The Pinyin people practice mainly subsistence agriculture. They grow crops and rear animals mostly for food and only sell some to buy farm inputs and seeing their children through education. We like eating Achuh with yellow soup. We are the main producers of vegetables like cabages and carrots. We equally produce spices like celery and onions.
LOCATION OF PINYIN AND THE LANGUAGE SPOKEN :
Pinyin is found in Santa subdivision, in mezam, North West region of Cameroon. The language spoken here is called the pinyin language.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF PINYIN AND ITS ORIGIN:
The pinyin people originated from Widikum in the North West region of Cameroon. They left Widikum at the start of the 19th century. The date of our migration is not yet certain.
The Pinyin people live in four main villages, South West of Bamenda in the Santa Subdivision, North West Region of Cameroon. Each of these villages within pinyin has a chief and are under a paramount fon. These sub villages within pinyin are; Menka, Buchi, Mesoh and Pinyin itself where the palace is located and is ruled by a paramount fon.
There's been disputes about who is the paramount fon. The villagers of Menka and their chief has been disputing the authenticity of the self declared fon of Pinyin as paramount fon. They refer to themselves and their language as Menka though there's linguistically no difference as far as culture is concerned. All the sub villages respect the same custom and traditions. They all observe two days each week as their country Sundays; (Nkap and Ngeyu respectively). These two days of the week are equally our market days. You don't dare go to the farm on either of these days. You better stay at home and rest or you go to the market. Most traditional ceremonies and "cry-die" celebrations are caried out on these days.
Talking about Christianity, nearly all pinyin people belong to a Christian church. 75% of the people are Protestants, 10% are Roman Catholics and others just 15%. The few Muslims here are foreigners who moved in solely for cattle rearing.
Traditional religion and culture still have a strong hold on the people. It's common for a man to have more than one wife. The fons have many wives including inherited ones.
Christianity has reached many as the bible especially the new testament has been translated into the mother tongue, pinyin language and part of the old testament between the year 2017 and 2018.
Thanks immensely for coming out with this Steemit Newbies Encouragement Program (SNEP).This is going to put smiles on our faces.
Thanks for reading through about my village, Pinyin and we are very welcoming in our village and anywhere we find ourselves.
