CREATIVE WRITING : MY EDUCATIONAL REFORMS AS A MINISTER IN THE EDUCATION SECTOR IN CAMEROON

in Steem Cameroon3 years ago

Hi steemians! Accept greetings from @paddykam and I do hope we are doing well. Am excited to be part of this wonderful initiative of informing and educating ourselves as far as our educational systems are concerned.

To be honest with us all, our educational system is not really bad to an extent. The few policies put it place would do us a lot of good if they are well implemented and there's constant follow up in the schools to be sure learners are empacted upon morally, mentally and physically.

Therefore as a minister am going to reinforce the following reforms; all of the schools be it lay private or public would have the same syllables, scheme of work and didactics. This will be given based on the levels of education. That's from the elementary levels to university.

Secondly am going to do decentralization of the whole school systems and placed delegates for proper follow up. This is going to be done monthly to be sure teachers are following their syllables by going through their lessons plan and lesson notes.

What I discovered is that most teachers don't plan their lessons and since there's little or no follow up, the learners are left to suffer.

Thirdly, am going to implement what we called effective discentralisation. Teachers will not have to only go to Yaounde to have their files processed. This time saved will be used either in the classroom or doing research.

I would need to revise the pay packages for teachers and their allowances especially for research and transportation allowances. Some of these teachers especially at the basic levels are not well paid. They are a bit neglected and this reflects their output. Some do part time jobs just to survive.

Am going to assist the mission and private sectors either by reducing taxes or giving them subdivisions. This will help improve the smooth running of their schools.

Forthly, Technical education needs to be reformed in such a way that before a student leaves he/she should be able to use the skills to be self employed.
Educated should be more of job creation centered and not job seekers as is the case now.

With all these reforms ladies and gentlemen , am going to reduce and gradually council the notion that students depend on the government for employment upon graduation. Instead many would be trained entrepreneurs who will create more jobs.

Wow,nice one. Hope they can be implemented and again our education is more of theory than practicals which should also be looked into.
Many teachers take on so many part time jobs with limited time to concentrate on the students and really like you said it's the students who suffer the effect. More grace to your efforts

Secondly am going to do decentralization of the whole school systems and placed delegates for proper follow up.

That's beautiful, it reminds me of the blockchain's system. It is still a rig of war to decentralize all the system and it'll go a long way to promote transparency in all systems. That's a nice idea, if only wishes were horses

Most teachers in deed don't prepare their lessons well and that's because a lot of them are not well paid by the school system so they have to try to focus on other things that can help them get money to keep body and soul together and that always comes with an opportunity cost.

I bet you, you nailed it with this point. For people who craft out the leaders of tomorrow to be underpaid is a sacrilege.

If only our government evaluates the system and gives room for great minds to bring suggestive reforms...

I think the syllabus for both private and public schools is the same. What we need is effective follow up and private schools have been doing just that.
Salaries, an increase in salaries is very important.
Technical education needs to be equipped and allocated more practical hours so that students upon completion of high school can be experts in their domains. Very good point you raised.

Decentralization is what the whole country needs to make progress.
