life in the home of the mentally ill persons.
She refused to have a picture with me.She said she didn't like me because I was a journalist for God's sake I don't even know how she knew that.
Hello dear steemians ,good day to you all. Today I like to share about life in the home of mentally impaired persons. On some feast days , I always like to spend some time with persons who have a kind of disability. not long ago, I spent some time with very vulnerable children who have hearing impairment ,visual impairment ,speech impairment, walking impairment and a few who had mental impairment. A moment with these vulnerable ones actually exposes their needs, their challenges, their expectations from society and persons of goodwill . You also get to see the things that make them happy.
With these gates the care takers can easily control the mad persons in there especially when they become arrogant or violent towards each other.
Visiting the Emmaus center in Bamenda was quite an emotional moments for me. Given that I met this young girl who is about 21. She doesn't know how to wear a pant, a bra ,or even use a pad during menstruation. The worst part of her madness is that she likes to go naked many times. The other women who are mentally ill were in bed ,they were all sleeping. The do get treatment from the two medical personnel who work with them. one an infirmarian, and the other a medical doctor who is a specialist in giving special care to persons with mental impairment. Some of them cook their own meals, but there are two other women who got healing from the same center and who cook for the rest of the mad people.
Hallucinations overcrowd her mind and she would say ten things and non relates to another, Standing or rolling on the ground.
Visiting the male section of the home for mentally ill persons, I was astonished to notice how orderly and neat the place was. I raised my camera but was scared to get a picture as I did not know the reaction that I could get from the ones I met sweeping and mopping, They are 8 of them in the male sector and are responding to treatment very well. Their rooms were so orderly. their laundry was neat and above all their toilets were sparkling. The only person bringing disorder in the compound the moment I got there is the youngest woman who is so recalcitrant and difficult to handle.
They may be termed mad but they keep their toilets very clean
Their laundry room is also very clean.
Thank you all for reading.
