Agroforestry for Climate change mitigation

Greetings fellow steemians hope we all had a nice day. Today I shall be talking about Agroforestry and how it can escalate climate action in most communities without compromising the livelihood of indigenous people.

Agroforestry

Agroforestry is simply the engagement of trees, crops and animals on the same piece of land in an interactive and beneficial system. In an aggroforetry system, plants interact with each other in a sustainable manner whereby the crops benefit from the plants and the plants in turn benefit from the animals and vice versa. This practice in itself, has proven that it can promote about four or five
SDGs (sustainable development goals )during the practice while practicing agroforestry. The growing of trees play a very vital role in this system of agriculture, the trees planted are multifunctional and apart from the fact that they are used to improve soil fertility. the trees are also used to feed farm animals and supply human beings with other medicinal purposes. Examples of such trees are calliandra for feeding sheeps, Accacia for improving soil fertility, Eritrina tree for live fencing, Tephrosia for soil improvement, Jakaranda, Hakia, casias, calestimon and podorcarpus for carbon sinks. Some of the trees planted in an agro forestry system are environmentally friendly and besides the environmental rule these trees have in live fencing for example, water catchment or water preservation, pollination that is bee farming, fuel wood etc.
The growing of trees in an Agroforestry system of farming promotes biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restorations. These trees also serve as cabon sinks as they absorb large amount s of carbon from the atmosphere.

In an Alley croping sub system under agroforestry, trees planted in alleys are multifunctional as they are used to control erosion , copiced to feed animals, act as wind breaks and grown for seed banks.

Agroforestry in itself can guarantee the promotion of Water conservation, plant and animal Biodiversity preservation, food insecurity, food production and animal production.

Therefore it is right to conclude that practicing Agroforestry is a sustainable practice for mitigating the effects of climate change. Thanks for reading
