Biology - Branches of Biology
I have been picking random topics and we being into, today I felt we should get a basic view of the different branches of biology and their meaning. Biology is the study of living things and their reaction to their surrounding environment. These living things have certain characteristics which categorize them under different branches, such as botany, zoology, mycology, microbiology, anthropology, etc.
What is Biology
The term biology can be divided into two Greek words, bios meaning life, and logos meaning reasoning. In summary, It is the scientific study of life on the planet earth. Life on earth is broad, so biologists have broken it into branches to better understand the nature, functions, and relations between the living organisms and their reactions. the study of biology gets to offer provision to data that is used to solve human problems regarding health, food, environment, etc. Biology is divided into three major divisions, which study different areas of living organisms. these major groups include:
- Zoology
- Botany
- Microbiology
Zoology
Zoology is the scientific study of animals, and it is the largest field of biology. We have Zoo(animals) and ology(studies) from the term Zoology, which summarize the whole branch. Zoology is further divided into sub-branches, which are
- Protozoology (The Study of Protozoa)
- Ichthyology (The Study of Fishes)
- Mammalogy (The Study of Mammals)
- Ornithology (The Study of Birds)
- Entomology (The Study of Insects)
- Herpetology (The Study of Amphibians and Reptiles)
Botany
Botany is the scientific study of the plant's life, anatomy, physiology, and environmental factors. It covers the whole life cycle of plants such as growth, reproductions, metabolisms, chemical properties of plants, etc. it is considered to be the oldest branch in biology and science as a whole. Botany is further divided into sub-branches, which are
- Taxonomy (The Study of giving Plant Names)
- Anatomy (The Study of Plant Structures)
- Pathology (The Study of Plant Diseases)
- Genetics (The Study of Plant Heredity)
- Physiology (The Study of Plant Metabolism)
- Ecology (The Study of Plant Distribution)
- Palaeology (The Study of Plant Evolution)
- Embryology (The Study of Plant Origin & Formation)
- Morphology (The Study of Plant External Formation)
- Histology (The Study of Plant microscopic examination)
What is Microbiology?
Microbiology is the third and last branch we will be looking at. Microbiology is the study of tiny living things and organisms. Micro means tiny things, which we cant see with the naked eyes. Examples of such organisms are algae, viruses, protozoa, fungi, bacteria, etc, and are usually called microbes. Some of these microbes are harmful to humans, while others are beneficial. Microbiology is further divided into two main sub-branches, which are Pure Sciences Branches and Applied Science Branches
Pure Sciences Branches | Applied Science Branches |
---|---|
Immunology | Epidemiology |
Bacteriology | Medical Microbiology |
Mycology | Air Microbiology |
Genetics | Pharmaceutical Microbiology |
Protozoology | Aquatic Microbiology |
Parasitology | Industrial Microbiology |
Algology | Agriculture Microbiology |
- | Food Microbiology |
- | Soil Microbiology |
In general, there are 25 branches of biology, the three I mentioned above are the major branches. I will list out all the branches, then we will start looking into the branches in the subsequence post.
List | List |
---|---|
Botany | Zoology |
Microbiology | Anatomy |
Morphology | Cell Biology |
Histology | Genetics |
Physiology | Taxonomy |
Embryology | Environmental Biology |
Paleontology | Parasitology |
Sociobiology | Immunology |
Biotechnology | Pharmacology |
Entomology | Biophysics |
Molecular biology | Biomathematics |
Biochemistry | Bioeconomics |
Biogeography | - |
I will end here and hope you will come by for more details of the different branches in my subsequent post.
