CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST VOLUME 6 :06:21:2021 / Clean-up Campaign

Greetings to all the members of this community, I hope we are doing well and we are all in good health. I am happy once more to participate in yet another contest organized by @thegreens on our ‘Green Deeds’ for our community.
A healthy environment is one that posses few risks and health hazards . The right to a healthy environment is even considered to be a human right and even states have the obligation to protect this human right by taking stronger actions in reducing environmental challenges.
In this light, i have volunteered on several occasions in my community and in other areas to keep my environment healthy, one of the things i did was to jointly participated in a two days clean up campaign together with @bongwong to clear up waste that had accumulated for long in my neighborhood and the company in charge had long abandoned it, perhaps due to the increasing insecurity in Bamenda they no longer go into quarters to carry dirt .

The waste as u can see on the picture above had accumulated for months yet no one seemed to be disturbed, the entire community was already suffering from the effects of land and air pollution, there were lots of mosquitoes especially during the evening hours which we all know causes malaria and this pollution was so dangerous because we were all at risk of further health dangers such as respiratory disease and other forms of cancer. We had to prevent all of these at all cost so we went from one house to the other encouraging them to come out massively so that we could all get rid of the dangerous waste .
On the first day of the campaign, it was quite challenging as many people didn’t show up, the few of us that were there didn’t have it easy as we didn’t have gloves to protect our hands with and the trucks we used in transporting the waste were so limited, however we still managed what we had and we did something reasonable meanwhile some of the people who passed by using that road were happy with the work that was ongoing and so they supported by giving some money for gloves , buckets and some ladies even proposed cooking for us the next day . This experience gave me new quarter friends too, I made some girls who were very active during the work session, we initiated several discussions while working and along the way we took some selfies

On day two, the turnout was massive as many people came out to support the work, we bought gloves and water for people to drink in the course of working, we could see even old mothers coming out and they gave moral support while we did the work . As we proceeded with work, we discussed among ourselves, giving advises and lessons on how we can keep our environment healthy and even how to separate disposable waste from non disposable waste. We also came out with a resolution to sanction anyone we find throwing dirt on that spot with a fine of 25000frs each

At the end of the day, I was satisfied with the results, the road was once more clean and healthy and we were all proud of ourselves and the work we had done . This is how i contributed in keeping my environment healthy .
