We are getting to the end of what has been a very exciting, thrilling, and full of twists 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. A lot of memories of both sadness and excitement, the journey of thirty-two teams in Qatar closes down four teams which two of them already have hands on the greatest stage of all of them. The closest Africa has been in taking a medal in the FIFA World Cup is getting to the quarter finals in the competition, and only four teams in Africa have made it to the quarter final of the FIFA World Cup competition. The first African nation to reach the quarter finals of the FIFA World Cup was Cameroon in the year 1990, next was Senegal in 2002, then Ghana in 2010 and now Morocco this year 2022 in Qatar. All these nations mentioned but Morocco unfortunately never made it passed the quarter finals of the competition, all of them lost at the quarter finals match. Morocco however brought a good name to their country and Africa as well when they beat Portugal at their first ever quarter finals match in the FIFA World Cup to get a pass to the semifinals, what a massive victory that was to Morocco as they became the first ever African country to win at quarter finals match in the FIFA World Cup and proceeding to the semifinals to play against the defending world champions France.
Unfortunately that semifinals match against France wasn’t the results that we hoped for as they were defeated by a 2 – 0 defeat that crushed the dreams of “the atlas lions” and the Africa as a whole in reaching our first ever FIFA World Cup finals. However the Moroccan team made Africa undoubtable proud of their journey and efforts of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and they still have a chance for a bronze medal in the competition. The first ever bronze medal in FIFA World Cup it would be for Africa if they are able the beat the 2018 runner-ups Croatia in later today at the Khalifa International Stadium at Doha, Qatar.
It would the second time these two nations are facing each other in a FIFA World Cup competition, the first was in this same competition at Qatar when they started the group stages. These two teams together with Belgium and Canada were supposed to face off against each other in ‘Group F’. And the face-off between Croatia and Morocco in the group stages ended in all square in a goal-less draw after 90 minutes. And both teams managed to come out of the group and into the knock-out stages and meeting again this time around in a must win match for a bronze medal in the competition.
