Presidency Jail - Kolkata

Presidency Jail commonly referred to as 'Old Alipore jail' or Harinban Prison (House of Deers)' got the status of the first Central Prison in Bengal. Old structures inside this prison have witnessed the history being written by the luminaries who were incarcerated in this jail since 1864.

Sri Aurobindo Ghosh, the great revolutionary, philosopher and journalist was imprisoned in the solitary 6 Degree Cell at Presidency Jail on charge of the infamous Alipore Bomb Case alias Maniktala Bomb-Conspiracy Case from 2 May 1908 to 9 May 1909, Wikipedia

Some revolutionaries were also arrested by the British police along with Sri Aurobindo from his paternal house at Manicktala.

Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das took up the brief and successfully defended Aurobindo Ghosh at the court of law.

It may be mentioned here that divine life of Sri Aurobindo started here.

Naren Gossain became the prosecution witness of the Alipore Bomb Case.

Kanailal Dutta and Satyendranath Bose assassinated him at the jail hospital premises for which both of them were hanged here. They were placed in Condemned Cell.

In his book Nirbasiter Atmakatha Upendranath Bandyopadhyay wrote, ". One day we found that the door of Kanai's cell was open, we heard that the date of his hanging had been fixed. What I saw was unforgettable. I have seen many sages, but never seen the serenity as on Kanai's face. One of the European guards asked Barin, How many boys do you have like him?..."
