Rakha bandhan means bond of protection or knot of protection. There are many stories about the ritual followed between brothers and sisters in Hinduism.

According to Bishnu Puran there was an ardent devotee of lord Vishnu. Maharaja Bali performed hundred Yagyas. The demigods told lord Vishnu that if maharaj Bali continues to sacrifice fire like this then one day he will steal the throne of haven. Hearing the pleading of demigods Shri Vishnu found a solution to this problem. Lord Vishnu incarnated as a small Brahmin in the palace of Maharaja Bali. Seeing the beautiful small Brahmin avtar. Maharaja Bali requested him to ask for any donation he wanted. Lord Vishnu ask for only three steps of land from Bali. Lord Vishnu expanded his form so much that in just two steps he measured earth and haven.

Bali came to know that Lord Vishnu is in front of him and requested to keep the third step on his head. Lord Vishnu placed his foot on King Bali's head and sent him to Patal lok. By obeying Lord Vishnu settled in Patal lok. Being the supreme devotee of God Bali Maharaj continues penance even in Patal lok.

Pleased with his devotion. Sri Narayan (Vishnu's another name as husband of Laxmi mata) appears in front of Bali and ordered him to ask for a boon. On this Bali Maharaj expressed his desire to make gatekeeper of Lord Vishnu as he wanted to see Lord Vishnu in front of him all the time. The Lord fulfilled the wish of devotee and he became the gatekeeper.

Maa Lakshmi was waiting for her Lord Vishnu in Vaikuntha. But bhaktavatsal has become the gatekeeper of his devotee (Bali). Mata Laxmi was looking for her ways to get her husband back. Mata Laxmi reached Patal lok on day of Sravan sukla Purnima and tied Rakhi on Bali Maharaj wrist, considering him as her brother.

As soon as Bali Maharaj expressed his desire to give a gift to his sister. Laxmi asked for permission to take her husband back to Vaikuntha. Bali become totally confused and allow them to go to Vaikuntha.

Since then, on this date the holy relationship between a brother and sister is being celebrated with great affection.

Sunday being holiday it was celebrated in our custom with fun when gifts were exchanged between sisters and brothers.
