CREATIVE WRITING: HOW FARMING IS DONE IN MY COMMUNITY: 13/10/21
Hi fellow steemians! How are we doing today? I am sure we're all fine by the special grace of God. I am a newbie and it's my first time participating in this contest of creative writing. The topic is very captivating and interesting given that my parents used agriculture to sponsor us in school.
Farming is the main activity carried out in my community in Pinyin in Santa subdivision. We grow crops like cocoa yams beans, maize, plantains cassava and soyabeans . These crops are grown for consumption. Some are sold to buy salts maggi and meat. (That's mostly what we can't produce).
Some of these farm products are kept only to be sold in September every year when schools are resuming. It facilitates the payment of school fees and purchasing of school items like books.
The method of farming used by our parents are local farm tools like hoes and hatchets since they cannot afford for ploughing machines. They do apply chemical fertilizer and manure from their animals in their crops. This is because the soil is not more as fertile as it used to be.
Crop yields has really dropped because they used to practice the Ankara system of farming where they burnt out the soil and soil nutrients.
Apart from the cultivation of crops, we equally keep domestic animals like pigs, goats, rabbits, cattle and dogs. When it comes to cattle, they bororos (muslims) are the main cattle rearers. They settle out of the village up the hills where they can have enough land to feed their cattle. At times they buy processed maize to feed their animals in the dry season due to lack of grass.
Those who rear animals and grow crops at the same time use maize to feed the animals and on the other hand use the waste from animals as manure to grow crops.
My fellow steemians thanks for reading and i hope you learned something from my community as far as farming is concerned.
Nice write up.
I have lived in santa and i trust them when it comes to farm work, they really work as if their lives depends on it and i think to an extent it really depends on it. And the rate at which they apply chemical fertilizer hmm am afraid it will affect the soil in future.
