Creative Writing Contest Vol. 15: What do you think about the number of subjects and content of subjects studied in Cameroon?

Am grateful to @thegreens for this contest. It is a great opportunity to be able express our deepest thoughts and express our minds through writing.

Education is a cornerstone for nation building and development. However, when such a valuable factor is ignored it might end up yeilding less fruits or in the worst case scenario no fruits at all. It is rather unforturnate that such a fundamental key stone has been rendered ambiguous and ineffective.

In this write up I will not be trying to demean or just highlight the failures of our educational system. I am however going to be critical analysing the short comings as well as the strengths of the educational system in our country.

I would like to clearly state that am a scholar in this educational system. I have undergone my nursery, primary, secondary, graduate and currently undergoing my post graduate studies in the field of theoritical Physics in these same educational system. So am not in any way trying to lay false claims or assertions of the system that I haven't experienced. Everything I will state here, will be first hand experience with the system.

ANALYSIS OF THE DIFFERENT ACADEMIC SECTORS.

1. PRIMARY SECTOR

Oftenly when we mention our academic experience we often keep out our primary sector and we major on secondary amd University expiriences which is a fundamental error.
When we use the word 'Primary' I think our immediate attention should be drawn to the fact that we are dealing with something fundamental and should be placed in first priority.

The primary sector of education provides the foundational and essential learning principles for a child's Life. In this sector of education we expect education to be oriented towards installing good values and virtures in children, laying a good foundation for critical thinking and causing this children to develop a good conciousness for nation building.
Unfortunately our primary sector has been compromised becuase children are now fed with knowledge which is not relevant for societal growth.

Am sure you must have heard people say this "Di phone dem so na chinese pikin their project dem so for primary school". That could be true to certain extend. Why other countries take advantage of the young absorbing brains of their children and cause them to embrace technology and science we here instead teach our children non productive information like drawing and labelling grasshopper Parts.

Propositions
I will propose that teachers and the governing body in charge of these sector of education. Design a curriculum that encapsulate all the major field of studies that are necessary for societal growth. This will serve of great benefit to the community.

2. THE SECONDARY SECTOR

In our Nation we have two secondary educational sectors, We have the Grammar system of education whose intend and end goal is research and the Technical system of education whose main objective is equipment ready and steady workable class of people.
Well am going to focus and talk more on the system that I studied in which is the Grammar system of education.

In form one to three I did 14 subjects.
In form three to five. I did subjects 11 subjects with the opportunity to major on sciences. In high school I did 5 subjects comprising only of science subjects.

Let try to assess the logic of this style of education . In form 1 to 3 the system assumes am a pupil who doesn't know what I really want so it provides me with many subjects to be able to 'taste' many subjects and see what might work out for me. In form 4 and 5 I am seen as one who might have discovered his or her own field of studies however need to focus on a certain branch of the subject . In high school I am seen as a person who has discovered what I want for Life and ready to make a choices specifically towards the carrier I desire.

As wise as these logic might seem, it think it is too ambiguous and time consuming. It is also void of focus. One of the main reasons is that the system doesn't brand career oriented subjects. If they where subjects in school that had specific end goals like mechanical engineering and electrical engineering etc it would be awesome. Subjects should be group in away that aids a suitable career path.

Secondly the direction of studies sometimes is not even based on immediate nation building. Why should we be studying fishing in Norway for Godsake?!

UNIVERSITY SECTOR
In the university students are expected to be studying with focus to a certain carreer choice but unfortunately it is possible to still find university students who cannot clear state in single sentence their objectives for studying what they are studying.
Infact alot of university students are completely oblivious about their choices for Life. It is bad becuase even at the post graduate level there is no carreer orientation for them. So people just study to have certificates no end goal with the knowledge.
Such a system is a good means of building educated lazy people and non resourceful people in the society.
