The story starts in Sudan where the war forces the characters to flee their homes and families. They embark on a journey to Ethiopia and then Kenya, where they spend years in refugee camps.
They are eventually given the opportunity to immigrate to the United States, where they struggle to adapt to their new surroundings and culture. Mamere, Paul, and Jeremiah are assigned to live in Kansas City, is sent to Boston.
Carrie is assigned to be their sponsor and help them with the transition, but she quickly finds out that the job is more challenging than she thought. The refugees have a hard time understanding the customs and language of the United States, which leads to a lot of misunderstandings and frustration.
Carrie, on the other hand, is struggling with her own personal issues and is not fully committed to helping them. She is also dealing with her own problems, such as her recent divorce and the fact that she has just lost her job.
As the characters start to find their footing, they begin to realize that they miss their families and homeland. They also come to understand that they will never be able to fully assimilate into American culture and must find ways to reconcile their past and present lives.
They find solace in each other, and through their friendship, they learn to cope with their grief, loss and sense of displacement.
The movie also explores the themes of identity, family, and community. The refugees find themselves torn between their past and present, and they struggle to find a sense of belonging in their new home.
