Man influences infiltration and overland flow through soil management , urbanization and other land use types .

ploughing and tilling of fields with rudimentary tools break up and overturns the surface soil increasing permeability and thus increasing infiltration therefore less overflow is generated.

When man terraces on hillsides and ridges across the slope as in contour farming overland flow is slowed down and infiltration rates increased.

Constant use of heavy agricultural machines such as tractors, combines, in areas of high mechanized agriculture as well as constant trampling and over grazing of pasture land hardens and compact the top soil thereby reducing permeability and increasing the rate of overland flow .

poor agricultural practices such as bush burning, farming along the slope etc. increase the rate of over land flow and reduce the permeability of the soil i.e. infiltration .

A high rate of urbanization accompanied by A LOT OF PAVED SURFACES, ROADS , PARKS ETC within the catchment area increases surface run off or overland flow and contribute more to rapid flow of streams leading to flooding . At the same time such paved surfaces reduce the rate of infiltration , as the surfaces are rendered impermeable due to tarmacadamization .

We can therefore ecourage the developement of good drainage systems in the city centres and avoid all activities that will hinder infiltration as seen above.We can actually avoid dumping waste along river channels and other drainage paths.
