Steem Cameroon Contest - World Menstral Hygiene Day

I’ve been wondering how this contest works and honestly I’ve been skipping it until when I saw @zenobiat writing on it and she gave me more insight on it so I decided to try out my luck. So here we are here and I’m going to tell y’all about the International Menstrual Hygiene Day join me to know more about it.

What do you know about the day?

It falls on the 28 of May and it’s a day set aside to spread awareness of the hygiene of a girl and woman during their menstrual flow and also to give the various important reasons of observing a good menstrual hygiene on a global level. This day was initiated by a German based NGO called WASH UNITED in the year 2013 and was first observed in the year 2014.

How do you or your country or your organization celebrate the day? (50-100 words)

In Cameroon this day is observed by NGOs like the one I’m in by organizing campaigns that provide information about menstrual hygiene, distribution of flyers, distribution of pads, distribution of hygienic materials that helps ladies to maintain a healthy menstrual life. Last year we went to mile 17 to spread awareness at the park and we had posters made, we also had flyers given out, this campaign was under the sponsorship of the FreeMind Center of the Presbyterian Church.

What impact does your community gain during and after the commemoration?

Firstly during the campaign we get to impact the lives of many girls directly first by giving them full and well researched information about the Global Menstrual Hygiene day and also distribute the necessary materials needed for them to maintain a proper hygiene.

Secondly we also get to gather up young persons whom we train to be agents that can also work with us to spread information like these to the community, this also helps the community to develop to having informed young persons in their midsts because information is power and we’ve just made it accessible to the people through our agents.

What issue or concern will you recommend to be commemorated this week and on what date?

Yes I do and actually the day falls on this 25th to the 31 of May and is known as The International week of solidarity with the peoples of Non-self governing territories a day set aside by the UN to celebrate solidarity with non-self governing territories of the world.
