Hello friends, It’s week 5 already of the engagement challenge. I am always excited to see the engagement challenge post each week, as it usually comes with interesting topic to deliberate on. This week in this community, we are expected to share the joy of parenthood as well as the amazing importance our parents have towards us. Read along with me as I share my thoughts in the contest.

In your own words, explain what you understand by parenthood

Mike meets Mary at the car park of a library, they waited for a cab together and started talking of the state of the country they both come from, the conversation becomes interesting and they both share same views. Mike would like to have such amazing conversation with Mary again, and probably know more about her. They exchanged contacts, with time, they become really Good friends, as they notice they have a lot in come. Such sweet friendship transformed into a romantic relationship, and they get to extend it to wedding. After the wedding, both Mike and Mary meets for an intercourse and Mary becomes pregnant. After Nine months Mary and Mike welcomes their first child. Having a child, both Mary and Mike becomes a parent.

It is True that Having a child, by birth makes people parents, but also having a child by adoption and getting married to someone who already has children also makes an individual a parent.

Parenthood is far more than just birthing, adopting children but it involves Genuine care, Love, attention, discipline as well as ensuring that the General well being of a child is ensured. The word ‘parenthood’ comes with heavy responsibility and as such an individual needs to plan both Emotionally, psychologically and financially before entering parenthood.

Tell us About your Heroes (parents) For example what you usually do together, their importance to you?

My dad

My dad used to own a big clothing textile shop in a market located in the Heart of Port- Harcourt, due to serious Health challenges we had to lease the shop to someone else. All through my year, my dad have had the responsibility of caring for us. My dad comes from a family where education is not valued. His brothers, my uncles value having more wives and properties rather than giving education to their children. Sad, but the truth, I and my siblings are the only educated ones from my fathers family. My dad is of great importance as he ensured he did not just train us only educationally, but also spiritually. My dad Never fails to discipline us when any of us tries to be off the hook.

My Mum

My mum is a great support system to my father. My mum is a good listener. She supports the family with her business and have gone into Agriculture to ensure that the family has more than enough to feed on. I have learnt love and respect firsthand from my mother. My mother is a strong woman, despite all the health challenges my father has faced, she has never given up on him. She is a woman with great faith who believes that challenges are only temporary.

what are the major roles of parents to you?

Parents have major roles of care. A person needs to have a means of livelihood before agreeing to take of the responsibility of being a parent. Parents needs to care, love as well as cherish their children. They need to also understand and care for the emotional well-being of their children. They also need to provide secular as well as spiritual education to their children. Parent is a great task and as such it should be taken seriously. If parents are able to raise children with Good morals, the world will be a better place.

Do you see parenthood as a scam?

I do not see parenthood as a scam, rather I see it as a great task and responsibility that one needs to be fully prepared before embarking on such journey. Even when two lovers get married, they still need to discuss if they are ready to have children or not. They need to discuss the discomfort associated with child bearing and raising as well as ways they will be able to handle it. Children are gifts from God and such gifts needs to be valued.

Final say

My parents are my hero as they have showed me real love and care. They have prepared me for the real world. I have gone through discipline to ensure that I am right on track. Anyone who intends to go into parenthood needs to be prepared in all aspects.
