What do you think about Elections in your country

My Country Nigeria deals in the Democratic electoral system, where the system lets the citizens of the country be of a judge who they prefer as the next leader for the next 8 years.

Nigeria elections hold every four years with a candidate having the chance to extend his tenure two times by re-applying again, I think this is a fair electoral system, as the candidate from the previous years will be given another time to explore or possibly complete the ongoing projects they've had.

The Nigeria election has always passed through several stages, whereby for a candidate to be considered for the competition, he had to belong to a party, then ensure he won the primary election in his party before he can further be considered for the public election, the electoral body is coordinated by INEC Nigeria.

What do you think about the electoral system in your country?

In my opinion, I believe the Electoral system in Nigeria is still in the developing phase, there are several measures that can be put in place to improve this body, but unfortunately, the system has refused to improve but still stick to there old method.

The Nigeria ELectoral body still transmits results from poll to poll physically, which is something I consider unprofessional, there is the internet these days, and I believe the election can be better transmitted through the net, but unfortunately, the system was unable to meet up to this leaving the election result at risk and unjust.

How is it done in your country?

Just like I had explained earlier that elections are transmitted through the physical body, the election is held in polls, whereby each local government has a certain number of polls where elections are conducted, then afterward, the total polls submit the election to the local government bodies, after that, each local government collate their result and submit to the states, then from states to the national bodies for public transmission.

This is a fair system regardless, but sometimes results can be tampered with through the several methods involved which is why I believed it would have been better off if the collations are done through the internet rather than involving physical transmission for the collation of results.

Is it transparent and fair in your country?

This is a very tricky question, well it all depends on what we define as transparent and fair, But Yes!! to some extent, the Nigeria election has been transparent and Fair.

But Personally, I find the election to be fair, but not the system of the election, I had explained earlier how the transmissions are done whereby the need to collate results from polls to polls physically, this is a lot of involvement with several committees, the result could have got tampered with and anything is bound to have happened in such condition.

Well, the election has become rather better than in the past, Nigeria election always involves some level of violence in the past where people are being strongarmed to vote for another party, but now with everyone accessing the internet, it has become better where crimes are quickly reported and the task force seeks to the fair justice as possibly as they can, so the system has been fair, but I believe there is more improvement that could have been done.

Assume there's no fairness and effectiveness as far as elections are concerned, what solutions can you propose to ensure it's being carried out the right way

The best solution to any form of election should be transparency, we can offer the election using the decentralized system as well.

What I mean by this is that the election result from the polls can straightforwardly be reported to a decentralized network, which means there won't be tampering afterward, it will be visible for everyone to see directly, and this will give people more ease it was the right candidate that had won.

There have always been several outcomes of electoral malpractices and this keeps happening because the system is broken and not transparent, if we could invite more transparency to this using a decentralization system, all records will be open and recorded on public tender which will be available for everyone to see.

Thank you everyone for coming, I hereby invite @solexybaba, @josepha, and @Sahmie to participate in the contest as well.

Sort:

My country also adheres to a democratic election system. The solution you offer to minimize fraud is very good. Good luck for the contest. I have also participated in this contest.

Decentralization seems to be a way to go to provide transparency in this era.
