INTRODUCTION

Welcome steemians to another national or international contest week 24.
I know that a lot is happening this week both at our various national levels and international.

Well for me here in my country Nigeria, JUNE 12, 2024, is a national holiday used to commemorate the return of DEMOCRACY in 1999 in Nigeria and the Federal government declares it a public holiday.

Coming this far from the era of military rule to the current civilian administration otherwise known as DEMOCRATIC RULE, is uneasy journey that has taken a whole lot to be achieved. The country has gone through so much ups and downs or challenges , to get to where it is today.

So steemians, in this week's contest I'm going to share how significant this day is, and means for us here in Nigeria.

BRIEF BACKGROUND OF NIGERIA's DEMOCRACY

Nigeria was colonized by Britain and got her freedom known as independence in 1st October, 1960. The achievement of the independence has witnessed some military interceptions as well as democratic dispensations from 1973 to 1983. The peak of the military rule came to an end when the then military ruler in the person of Major General Sani Abacha, died in 1998. General Abdulsalami Abubakar became his successor and took over from him. General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who must have seen the harsh effects the military regime, vowed to make a transition to a democratic rule. This brought the creation of a new Constitution for the country on MAY 5TH 1999. The new Constitution established new electoral laws that gave room for conduct of elections. Elections were now held and the retired general, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo contested and won as the president of Nigeria and ruled for eight years.

PROPOSED MASCOT FOR THE DEMOCRACY DAY

The mascot for democracy day is the Nigerian flag.

Green White Green

Description Of the Nigerian Flag

The Nigerian flag consists of three line colors. Green at the left side, white at the Middle, and another Green at right side. The green color represents our rich natural resources and wealth. The white represents peace and Unity.

Changes The Day Has Brought To My Community

The day has awaken our sense of national Unity and integration. It has also created the room for an assessment between the military and democratic rule.

The Active Promoters And Some Impactful Additions That Can Be Made

The active Promoter of the democracy day is the federal government of Nigeria.

I would like the to be added with the freedom of innocent inmates in the Nigerian prisons.

CONCLUSION

Democracy has come to stay in Nigeria. Having gone through tough paths of colonization the height of ful practice of democracy, the country has continued to maintain democratic norms. Though this is not without challenges, it has established democratic institutions to carry out her democratic functions.

The availability of a democratic constitution has helped in defining democratic functions so as to avoid democratic ambiguity. From the time of the last military regime, the country has shown capacity to sustain its hard democracy.
