The relationship between Ozone depletion and global warming (climate change)

Hello steemians

Hope we are all in good shape. If you are having some difficulties in one way or the other, I’m here to tell you that it will pass away and become a lesson, courage.

Today we will understand what Ozone depletion and global warming are all about, and the relationship between these phenomena. In addition to that, we will still get knowledge on what is affecting our planet Earth today as seen in many countries where conditions are changing as days go by. We hear of flash floods, random forest fires, and extreme dryness experienced in strange places. These are all as a result of change in the normal conditions of the Earth.

OZONE DEPLETION
Ozone depletion is simply the reduction (removal) of the ozone layer of the earth’s upper atmosphere (stratosphere) enabling harmful radiations from the sun such as the ultraviolet (UV) radiation to reach the Earth’s surface. The sun illuminates radiations of different portions of the electromagnetic spectrum but only selected portions of these incoming radiations reaches the Earth’s surface and the destructive portion (UV) is shielded and reflected back into space by the ozone layer (imagine the absence of the ozone layer and give it a thought). The natural Earth’s build-up is in the manner where little or no UV radiation reaches the surface but due to anthropogenic (human) activities, the is release of gases containing halons (halons are halogens which are the group VII elements of the periodic table such as chlorine, fluorine etc…….hope you can recall😉) such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which of course release halons that react with the oxygen in the ozone layer under sunlight and eats this oxygen up hence reducing the thickness of the Ozone layer and causing Ozone depletion. Due to the release of the CFCs and other halons containing gases, the ozone layer of our planet has experienced continuous reduction forming the ozone hole and so it has allowed the penetration of UV radiations in some extent to the surface and if this happens in an inhabited area, it will cause skin cancer and other skin diseases that may lead to dead. GLOBAL WARMING
Global warming is the overall increase in the Earth’s temperature due to the enhancement of greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are gases meant to keep the Earth’s temperature warm at all times, that is holding some of the heat reflected by the Earth’s surface from the illumination of radiations from the sun. Keeping the Earth’s temperature mild isn’t a bad thing but when you increase the thickness of this layer of gases responsible for that, instead of just keeping a normal temperature, the Earth will become hot. Carbon-dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases but due to the over production of carbon-dioxide by anthropogenic activities, the concentration of this gas has increased drastically forming a carbon-dioxide blanket that envelops the Earth and holds more heat than normal hence increasing the Earth’s temperature to a level possible to cause skin burns. The photo below is an example of what skin burn look a like.source

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OZONE DEPLETION AND GLOBAL WARMING
Firstly, global warming and ozone depletion are caused due to human activities such as the use of cars, motorcycles, domestic gas, refrigerators, air conditioners, industries etc.
Secondly, the increase in greenhouse gases that causes global warming disrupts the free flow of heat from the surface through the ozone layer, this makes the lower atmosphere (troposphere) very hot and the upper atmosphere (stratosphere) where the ozone layer is to be very cold. When the ozone layers are too cold they form an ozone-depleting polar cloud which drastically eats up the ozone layer and depletes it. Since the poles are naturally colder they tend to form this cloud especially in the South Pole and this causes ozone depletion.

WHAT IS HAPPENING TODAY
This year it was seen in most parts of Cameroon that the rainy season wasn’t that effective as much rainfall didn’t take place as expected. Looking at the high temperatures experienced in Canada and some parts of the USA showed a clear view of global warming and this affected many and led to the death of many. The word has taken several measures to counter the enhancement of greenhouse gases and also reduce the rate of CFCs released into the atmosphere by laying of preventive measures and policies as well as employing eco-friendly substitutes for the destructive gases.

Hopefully this helps in answering some of your questions about the protection and destruction of nature.
Thanks for your time 🤝
God bless you 🙏

This is a beautiful explanation of the concept of ozone depletion and global warming.

This year it was seen in most parts of Cameroon that the rainy season wasn’t that effective as much rainfall didn’t take place as expected

This is true because i spent the whole of August in Dschang and we had very little rains. This are actually changing. Thanks for your explanation and exposure .

Thanks for this exposure. I'm sure many were unaware of this. But just a correction. Not all UV radiations are harmful. There are the harmful and useful parts in the UV radiation spectrum. Some of them are very important for processes such as photosynthesis where they activate electrons in photosystems in plant cells. Photosynthesis as we all know is a process which is important to eliminate carbon dioxide from the environment. So only the harmful radiation are shielded by the ozone layer. I'd be waiting to read more from you though. Thanks for sharing.

Wow I’m glad you have some knowledge on this. Even melanin comes from exposure to uv radiations. The problem comes from prolonged exposure to UV rays. We actually have UVA, UVB, and UVC but on normal bases UVB & UVA actually reaches the surface at certain levels but this doesn’t make it non harmful. When an ozone hole is created, some level of UVC penetrates the ozone and gets to the surface while the level of UVB & UVA increases to more than normal and when living organisms without much hairs on their skin becomes exposed to it, they may have long term or acute skin diseases such as skin cancer. UV is beneficial to man and at the same time detrimental depending on how long one is exposed and the level of illumination.

Oh no don't get me wrong. I was just saying you should be more specific with what's harmful in UV rays. Like I said, it's not harmful to plants that help us reduce carbon dioxide from the air. Since you were speaking in terms of global warming, we don't need to go into it's uses in humans. But that of the plants is what helps cancel out the effect of the halides that form CFCs if you get what I mean. Lol. We could talk about this all day and still be on same point. 😅Thanks for your response

Thanks very much @acbaby that's a great thought when we creat awareness to solve a problem becomes easier, first of all we must appreciate nature and if we do it, we will not destroy it. I will be happy if you give ways that even a common man will apply so as to reduce global warming and ozone depletion🙏🙏🙏
