US and Mexico make deal to ease Venezuela migration

The United States and Mexico have agreed to a plan that allows some Venezuelan migrants to enter the United States, but returns illegal immigrants to Mexico.It is hoped that the agreement will alleviate pressure at the US-Mexico border, where a steady flow of Venezuelans fleeing the crisis-stricken nation continues to arrive.
Beginning immediately, 24,000 migrants will arrive in the United States via flights.
In the past five years, more than six million Venezuelans have emigrated.The exodus is one of the world's largest migrations, fueled by violence, food, fuel, and medicine shortages, and repression by President Nicolás Maduro's government.People desiring to better their lives have walked thousands of miles along perilous routes to reach the US-Mexico border, where they then attempt illegal entry or claim asylum.
Under the new agreement, which is effective immediately, the 24,000 eligible Venezuelan migrants - a tiny fraction of those who have fled the country - will be permitted to enter the United States via air and remain for up to two years.

According to a statement from the US Department of Homeland Security, they must still be in Venezuela and have not reached the US-Mexico border.
They will also need a person or organization based in the United States to provide financial support and substantiate their participation in the program.

Undocumented Venezuelans who cross the southern border are now subject to deportation to Mexico, whereas in the past authorities typically did not accept deportations of Venezuelans.
This is part of Title 42, a controversial Trump-era policy that allows the US to swiftly expel undocumented migrants, thereby denying them the opportunity to seek asylum. According to officials, it was introduced during the pandemic to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in holding facilities.
Until now, the majority of Venezuelans who crossed into the United States were not returned; instead, they were temporarily permitted entry and given the opportunity to apply for asylum.

Now, the thousands of Venezuelans who have illegally entered the United States could be deported to Mexico.
As Venezuela's economic and political situation has deteriorated over the past year, record numbers of Venezuelans have made the perilous journey across South America and Mexico to reach the United States.

"Too dehydrated to cry" - migrants' perilous journey
The program is based on a similar United States model called Uniting for Ukraine, which offered refuge to more than 100,000 Ukrainians who fled their country after Russia's invasion this year.
With US midterm elections approaching in November, the so-called "humanitarian parole program" has been launched.
The Biden administration hopes that the idea of assisting Venezuelans fleeing poverty, political unrest, and violence will play well politically, particularly if it is combined with expelling thousands of illegal border crossers.
Due to the closeness of the vote, its impact may be limited, and in the meantime, tens of thousands of desperate and exhausted Venezuelan migrants are caught in the crossfire.
