The Peña José Modesto Darcourt emerged as a project in mid-2020, in the midst of the pandemic. “We were a group of friends with baseball practice in common. We wanted to do something organized, that was not only fielding, throwing, running, but going a little further. And because of the connotation of what we wanted to do, we were looking for a sports figure to whom we could pay tribute”

In the case of José Modesto Darcourt, when looking for the history of pitchers, especially left-handed, he had an important role and, however, went into oblivion.
“After his retirement, at only 32 years old, no one was talking about him. The Chiqui, as those of us who played next to him and his neighbors told him, died young, at only 56 years old. Despite this, he left a great career, both in National Series and in the Cuba team," Smith says as we talk in the Colón cemetery, where the remains of the former pitcher rest.
He recalls that “he pitched in the time of the aluminum bat. Logically, that gave greater strength to the offense and their numbers were impressive." That is why, from our peña we do not let him die and two years after operating as a project, we continue to grow.

Since the beginning of November we have been in the second anniversary mode, celebrating sports activities and doing the social work that has distinguished us these two years.

“A while ago we finished our book dedicated to José Modesto Darcourt. Now we have made a brochure with everything done by the peña since its foundation, on November 7, 2020.

“In the social sphere, the most important thing has been the attention to the nursing home, to the children without family protection and to the maternal, all from the Habana del Este municipality. We are the godparents of these institutions.

"In addition, we participate in blood donations and together with the Sports Directorate of Habana del Este in the celebrations of transcendent dates.
“On the occasion of November 19, National Day of Physical Culture and Sports, we support the Giraldo Córdova Cardín High Performance Athlete Training School. We are very grateful to the management of that center, which has opened its arms to us as another member.

"Likewise, we organized a softball clinic and the All-Star Game (Capitalinos and Almendares) of the fourth José Modesto Darcourt Cup. We convened the most outstanding of the tournament and the women of our peña were present in what we call the encounter of love. Although most of them didn't know how to play softball, they dressed up in the clothes of their husbands and boyfriends, and we had a fun time.

"The test of skills included the home run to first, the return to the infield, the shot to the outfield and the home run derby.

"For the 64th anniversary of the birth of José Modesto Darcourt, on November 26, the COCO radio station dedicated an extensive and varied program to him, with the participation of family, friends, baseball players and directors.

"Today, as you can see, we came to his grave to remember him with two older sons. We made a tribute to what he was: an active, cheerful man, who loved to share and always be surrounded by his loved ones.”

We are in the closing of the fourth cup and we have created two tournaments in tribute to members of our club who died. We are a rock that we have been creating since we started, because that is what feeds us, makes us great.

“We have pending visits to kindergartens and a nursing home, which is not for interns. In addition, we are engaged in tasks that the Municipal Sports Directorate of Habana del Este has asked us for.

“For February, on the occasion of the date of Darcourt's death, the 17th of that month, we want to finish our place of honor, at the Fe del Valle sports center. It will be available to the entire community, mainly the Camilo Cienfuegos.

“It will be a place to go to see photos, books and exhibitions about what we are doing in memory of Chiqui, the first world baseball champion from the Habana del Este municipality”
