My Actifit Report Card: March 26 2021
I let myself have something of a slack day today, but I’m still going to hit my writing goal.
Of course, when I say slack day I really mean that I put my classwork off for tomorrow (they aren’t due until Sunday, though I think I’ll try to finish them tomorrow because I’ll have plenty of time), given that I actually achieved quite a bit.
For one thing, I outlined my novel Aspects of Sand, which is going to be an awesome fantasy novel.
The central plot is a little MacGuffin-y, since the plot is basically a fantasy zombie apocalypse as a plague unleashed by the gods. There’s a “go get the magic artifact and fix things” element, but I’m going to elevate it by focusing on the protagonist’s need to come to grips that the gods she worships may not be as benevolent as she thought.
Of course, there’s good justification for the plague. Her people depend on soul-eating magic, though this is a well-kept secret. It’s also the case that the plague isn’t really just brought about by the gods, but rather an attempt to usurp the gods’ power. While the population at large is more or less innocent, the problem with a plague is that once it’s unleashed, it doesn’t stop with the people it originally punishes.
Given that my last novel I wrote in a month didn’t even have a single word of planning on paper, I feel good about this. I’ve named a half-dozen characters and another half-dozen places, and sketched out some additional details for the setting and the Hero’s Journey for the protagonist.
That’s pretty good, I think. I’ll be posting updates on @kwilleywrites if people are interested in following my progress.
I’m not really much of a fantasy author, which is why I’m a little worried. I feel more comfortable when I write sci-fi, but I should have a good enough background in tropes and conventions that it should feel fresh while still having a mass market appeal.
I also finished the last post in my rehash of my blog series on Jordan Peterson’s 12 Rules for Life. It’s sort of bittersweet, because it was a great thought exercise. On the other hand, it also opens me up to move on to some new stuff, though I’m going to focus on the rest of Beyond Order before I start doing other stuff. Some of that is because Peterson draws a lot of traffic, but it’s mostly that I find his work very interesting, even where I disagree with him.
