I never thought I’d be scammed

I thought art of getting scammed was only reserved to the older generation and the non tech savvy. Today I was proved wrong. I fell for a Google Play gift card scam who posed as my trusted parish priest. His reasoning was certainly plausible. I didn’t have a doubt that his request to get him some gift cards for a cancer patient he promised to give to her was not out of the ordinary. The scammer “preyed” on this trusted relationship over WhatsApp. I don’t use WhatsApp much and the number was an Aussie mobile number but I should have double checked just to be sure. The alarm bells only sounded after he asked for more gift cards. Reality finally sunk in. I immediately rang him and I knew the damage had already been done.

It’s not so much the money, but I feel violated. My personal trust between people has been lost. There’s one good thing that has arisen from this—it’s that I’ve learned a very valuable lesson. Always question who is on the other side if it involves something important or of financial matters. A quick phone call is all it takes. I find it easier to accept crypto losses, transferring to a wrong wallet, getting hacked, but this is just harder to recover from emotionally. I hope tomorrow is a better day.
