Ahead of Arsenal vs MU, Arteta: Not as hot as it used to be

in WhereIN4 years ago

The tension of Arsenal's match against Manchester United has continued to decline. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta revealed the reason.
In the past, the battle between Arsenal and MU was almost always hot. A match at Old Trafford in 1990 was marked by a riot involving 21 people, resulting in both teams being sentenced to a point deduction.

Then in 2003, Arsenal were fined 175,000 for a number of players showing signs of provocation after Ruud van Nistelrooy failed to convert a penalty. A year later, a pizzagate incident in which Sir Alex Ferguson, the MU manager at the time, was hit by a pizza throw that was known to have been caused by Cesc Fabregas.

After that there were almost no more incidents that occurred in the middle of the two Premier League giants. Arteta believes this is because the players are being watched more closely, especially after the introduction of VAR.

"The duel is calmer, but it's not just Arsenal and United's matches," Arteta told the Daily Mail. "In general you see the way the derbies used to be and are not the same now. The game evolved."
