How should I tackle debt?
Are you feeling overburdened by tackling debt? Don’t worry! It can be managed with a structured plan. I am not a financial advisor or planner, but I have managed multiple debts fifteen years ago. First I made a list of all debts that I had to repay. Don’t make calculations in your mind only. Take a copy and write it down all debts and pending balances with interest rates, so that a perfect plan can be made to repay them all on time.
When I had made the plan to repay my debts, I didn’t know that there were popular strategies to eliminate debts. However, recently I read about those strategies that are known as the snowball method and the avalanche method. If you go with the snowball method, first you need to repay the small debts, while with the avalanche method, you have to eliminate debts that charges highest interest rates. Now you have to decide which method fits for your finance and achievements. Though I didn’t know anything about repayment strategies, when I started repaying debts, but the idea that I had applied to repay my debts matches with the avalanche method. We had loans with 10 percent monthly interest rates that were one of the highest interest rates. I took loan from microfinance companies that used to take 23% interest rates per annum.
Create a monthly budget for household expenses including other essentials so that you can save money for debt repayment. Realistic budget will help you track your expenses, whether those are essentials or non-essentials. Once you identify non-essential expenses, you can cut back them. If you can save small amount of money, you can use them to repay your debt.
Debt repayment or savings is only possible, if you are earning money and trying to increase your income. Until you increase your income, you can’t be able to save extra money for debt repayment. So do whatever you can do to earn money, but that must be legal money.
There are several debt consolidation organizations that consolidate multiple debts. You can take their service to consolidate your high interest debts. They may help you to convert multiple monthly payments into a single one even with lower interest rates. However, you need to careful about their hidden fees if they have any, so read their terms and conditions sharply. However, I have never contacted them for their services.
You need to repay debts consistently without taking new loan. But if your earnings is blocked, then debt repayment will be tough because to repay existing loan, you will have to take another loan and thus you will fall in debt cycle. So, income is mandatory, if you want to become financial freedom. So be patient and make consistent payment to eliminate debts.
I am not a financial advisor or planner. This is my personal experienced that I have shared here. However, I have also worked in a debt consolidation organization, but never took their help to eliminate my debt. You can take a help of financial advisor or you can do it yourself.
