Humans are not cattle
I have lived in Ukraine, and I am well aware that it is like an onion. Each layer that you strip away is more pungent. It is equally true of Russia. I have always been aware that Ukraine is attractive to Russia because of the vast natural resources found in the Donbas region of Ukraine. It never occurred to me that the government of Russia is interested in stealing the population of Ukraine as if they were cattle to be rustled. Canada has an open-door immigration policy hoping to triple its population over the next 80 years. It is attractive to immigrants because Canada gives the illusion that it will provide people with a better life. Russia can never fool newcomers as Canada can.
Life in Canada is relatively better than in other countries, but the agenda of moving the population into neo-feudalism is still a few years away. That isn't the case in Russia. Having a few oligarchs living off the people isn't even a secret in Russia. They need more cattle to maintain their wealth.
