Why treasure is important in game design?

Treasure is important in game design because collecting vast hordes of treasure is an essential part of the pirate fantasy. Unfortunately, piles of gold are actually pretty hard to render conveniently in a videogame. We came up with a special technique that made flat, hand painted treasures seem to be solid, dimensional objects that sat prominently on the ship’s deck.
