SEC-S14W5 | My Biggest Travel in 2023 | Travel by train to Nanu Oya

Hello, everyone. Traveling is one of my favorite pastimes because it takes me to places that I would never visit otherwise, allows me to meet people from different cultures, and helps me to learn about their way of traditions and way of life. In the year 2023, I went on several trips with my family, housing scheme members, and sisters and brothers. Here, I will tell you about the most recent visit I made with my sister and her academic staff at the end of November.

Where you go during the year 2023? What activities were carried out?

In the year 2023, I participated in several trips, the most exciting of which was a trip to Nuwara Eliya by train, with my sister's academic staff in November. My sister is the principal of a primary school, when she and her academic staff went on a trip, they used to call me to join them.

We could enjoy the entire three-day trip by visiting several important places such as Haggala botanical gardens, Tea Factory, Gregory Lake, a very beautiful temple located on a hilltop, and waterfalls such as Bomburu Ella. Activities like horseback riding and boating on Gregory Lake provided us with a thrilling experience. Not only that the beautiful sight we enjoyed by looking out of the observation compartment of the train was an immense experience to us.

Any anecdote that makes this trip so unique to be considered the best one of '23? Did you experience this alone or with somebody else?

Yes, it was unique because this time we traveled by train from Colombo to Nanu Oya. Traveling by train is both cheaper and more comfortable, as well as very enjoyable, especially for long journeys. We traveled by booking an observation saloon, so we could enjoy the full view of the environment, which included lush jungles, wide mountains, cute little villages, numerous waterfalls, and beautiful tea estates.

The most exciting activity was the opportunity to visit Pedro Tea Estate. A factory tour guide explained the entire tea-making process to us, which was a new experience for me. That was very interesting, and I learned a lot about the tea-making process as a result. Their complimentary cup of tea at the end strengthened our bond.

Our group was made up of 15 people, including academic staff and their families. There were two children under the age of two and two children under the age of ten, but they enjoyed with us without disturbing our travel.

Have you planned a budget for it? How much you spend during the trip?

Yes, it is my habit to prepare a budget for any task, and I did so for this trip as well. I budgeted Rs. 25000-/- (Steem 309) but I cost only Rs. 18000-/- (Steem 222.000) for the entire three-day trip.

The reason for my low cost was the transport charges. As we used the train it cost only Rs. 5000/- for the ticket up and down. I spent Rs. 13000/- on food, drinks, and other miscellaneous expenses. Even though we joined this trip as a group, we had to bear our costs.

Are you thinking about making an amazing travel in 2024? Which would be the selected place?

Yes, of course, I have plans to visit many new places in 2024 that I haven't been able to visit thus far. My main plan is to go on an overseas trip to Bangkok, Thailand in February or March. I’m aware that there are major tourist attractions in Bangkok that we can visit. Therefore, I'm looking forward to visiting Bangkok shortly, possibly in February 2024.
