These are ancient fishing structures dating back over 2,000 years. Their origin is believed to be linked to the engineering of the Phoenicians, who developed these wooden stilt constructions to facilitate fishing, especially during bad weather.
These structures, primarily made of Aleppo pine wood—chosen for its characteristics such as drought resistance, suitability for calcareous soils, flexibility, and rich protective resin—are directly anchored to the rocks, making them particularly stable and durable.
In the past, trabucchi were essential tools for local fishermen, allowing them to fish without venturing into open seas, thereby reducing the risks associated with storms and pirate attacks.
Today, many of these trabucchi have been restored and converted into restaurants, while maintaining their original structure, which adds to their unique charm.
One of the most famous trabucchi in Peschici is "Trabucco da Mimì," located at Punta San Nicola. This trabucco has become a popular gathering spot for both tourists and locals, thanks to its spectacular seaside location and the opportunity to enjoy traditional Apulian food in a historic setting.
Tip: The term "trabucco" may derive from "trabocchetto," (trap in English) referring to the net that traps fish by exploiting marine currents. However, some scholars suggest that the origin of the name might trace back to the Latin "trabs, trabis," meaning beam or wood, highlighting the wooden structure of these ancient fishing machines. Both theories reflect different historical and regional interpretations
