The Diarygame || Travel Diary: Vieste, Sunday, August 11

Dear Traveling Steemit friends,
Today, I ventured to the charming town of Vieste, a hidden gem perched on the Gargano promontory along the Adriatic Sea in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. This picturesque coastal town is surrounded by pristine beaches and the rugged cliffs of the Gargano National Park, deeply rich in history and natural beauty.
In Vieste, I immersed myself in the local culture and discovered the mesmerizing legend of Pizzomunno, the majestic sea stack that dominates the landscape. This impressive monolith, formed about 100 million years ago, stands as a testament to the ancient marine organisms that settled and solidified over thousands of years, forming the massive limestone mass that later eroded.

Pizzomunno was shaped by the slow erosive action of wind and sea, which initially may have created a natural arch that, upon collapsing, left this great white monolith isolated.
The name of this sea stack, meaning "piece of the world," comes from a legend deeply rooted in popular culture, orally passed down by the inhabitants of Vieste. The legend tells of Pizzomunno, a young fisherman of extraordinary beauty, deeply in love with Cristalda, the most beautiful girl in the village. Their love, so pure and strong, aroused the envy of the sea sirens, who tried every day to seduce Pizzomunno with their songs, offering him immortality in exchange for his love. However, the young man always refused, faithful to his beloved Cristalda.
One night, the sirens, consumed by jealousy, decided to take revenge. They kidnapped Cristalda and dragged her into the marine abyss, under the helpless eyes of Pizzomunno. The young man's grief was so great that he turned to stone, becoming the white monolith that today bears his name. It is said that every hundred years, for just one night, Cristalda rises from the abyss to reunite with Pizzomunno, who becomes human again for the occasion, and the two can relive their lost love.

This legend was also featured by the singer-songwriter Max Gazzè in his song "The Legend of Cristalda and Pizzomunno," presented at the Sanremo Music Festival 2018, where it moved the audience with this poignant love story.
Dear friends, another great discovery today! I hope you found my journey through the legend of Pizzomunno and Cristalda fascinating. Yesterday I promised you my trip to the Tremiti Islands, but I've rescheduled it for tomorrow. Stay tuned for more adventures.

🤓 seriously?
I go for the other story! The fisherman and Cristalda and the sirens. That fisherman must have been a hunk. I mean... Even I would have stepped out of the sea to catch him. I assume that can't be too difficult... Fisherman x nets... 😍
He's like the last giant Balaton. He turned into stone as his daughter died and fell. The hole he made is the present Lake Balaton in Hungary.
