Hello Dear Steemians, I welcome you all to my blog today. The health topic I would be discussing today is called Anemia, what effect does Anemia cause in the body, what are the symptoms of Anemia, and how to prevent Anemia. Go with me as I discuss this important topic.

Source

Anemia can be defined as a shortage of Red Blood cells in the body, as we all know that blood is Life, and it functions in a way that it carries nutrients and oxygen to our body cells and transport the metabolic waste product from the cell. As important as the blood is, a shortage of it or not having the right amount of blood the body needed causes some threats to having good health. More than 1.5million people were recorded with the history of Anemia every year in Nigeria and it also affects more than 25% globally.

Types of Anaemia

There are different types of Anemia but the common ones are Iron deficiencies anemia, Vitamin deficiency anemia, Anemia of Inflammation, and hemolytic anemia.

  • Iron deficiency anemia: This most common type of anaemia and it is caused by a shortage of iron in the body.

  • Vitamin deficiency anemia: This is caused by a shortage of Vitamin B12 and vitamin B9

  • Anemia of inflammation: This is the type of anaemia that affects people who have inflammation conditions such as cancer, infections, and chronic kidney disease.

  • Hemolytic anemia: This is a disorder whereby red blood cells get destroyed faster than they are being produced such condition includes sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, etc.

Who has Anemia most and what causes it

Sickle Cell Patient: Like we know that sickle cell is a disorder inherited from both parent that has Haemoglobin S and leaving the child with genotype SS which is abnormal haemoglobin with the red blood cell shape of sickle and because the cells are not normal, it dies early and leaving the patient with a shortage of Red blood cell.

Anemia in Pregnancy: This type of Anemia happen mostly to pregnant woman, as we know that during pregnancy, the body undergoes some physiological changes and such patients do not take adequate healthy diet and the iron supplements given to the pregnant woman during their antenatal visit. It's usually common in rural area for pregnant that does not register for anti-natal. W.H.O estimated that about 38% of pregnant women are anemic.

Anemia of other Individuals: This can be referred to children or adults who lack an adequate healthy diet, or suffer increased blood loss due to gastric ulcers, fibroid, haemorrhage, and chronic diseases like cancer, chronic kidney disease, and chronic heart failure.

    Symptoms of Anemia

There are many symptoms of Anemia and I will be listing them below:
  • Fatigue.
  • Dizziness.
  • Weakness.
  • Headache.
  • Shortness of Breath.
  • Pale Skin.
  • Cold.
  • Fast Heart rate.

  • Effect of Anemia on the body

  • Anemia affects the body as the patient suffering from it may experience cold, tiredness, and sometimes hair loss.

  • Sickle cell Anemia patients might suffer lungs and heart complications.

  • An anemic patient may experience convulsion and might not be able to walk probably because of weakness.

  • Pregnant woman with Anemia might give birth to a baby with low body weight and the baby may experience low red blood cells too.

  • Prevention of Anaemia

  • Anemia can be prevented by eating a healthy diet that provides Iron, vitamin B12, and vitamin B9 such as liver and other meat organs, white beans, spinach, and lettuce, and so on.

  • Pregnancy women should ensure they take their iron supplements and eat well too.

  • Treatment For Anemia

The treatment for Anemia varies and it depends on the underlying diagnosis and the level of the anemia. Some people can overcome anaemia with good food and intake of Iron supplements, while some have to go for a blood transfusion before they can be okay. A drug named hydroxyurea is also used to treat sickle cell Anaemia.

    Conclusion

As I said earlier, Anemia is the shortage of Red blood cells, which can exist as a result of iron deficiency, vitamin deficiency, inheriting abnormal haemoglobin, and disease associated with inflammation. I discussed prevention, and how it is treated. Anemia can shorten lifespan if not properly treated, so it is advisable for anyone with Anemia to go see a physician for proper checkups and treatment. This is where I will be stopping, for now, Thank you for reading.
