Good dressing has been a major concern in human history. We dress not just to protect the skin but to showcase our beauty in most cases.

My name is Esther Nathan @essygold, I am from Ohafia in Abia State of Nigeria, follow me along to learn a bit of our cultural outfits for women starting from the bride getting married.

THE BRIDAL DRESS

Marriage according to historical norms of any society is usually for the purpose of establishing a family. The marriage ceremony serves as an honour and dignifies the couple and their family.

The bridal cloth for the traditional marriage ceremony comes in various stages depending on how you choose to dress and how many clothes your husband-to-be is able to buy for you. After the bride price has been paid, the bride will be gorgeously dressed with a head-gear jewelries and an attractive shining Voil lace material before she can come out to meet the groom for the marriage ceremony. This very cloth she is wearing is bought by the groom, so both of them will be dressed with the same colourful attire. At this point the Marriage Ceremony begins.

THE OCCASIONAL DRESSING

Every woman in my town must have at least 1 or 2 of an outing clothes. Some women have a box filled up with wrappers and blouses. The most dignified type is the ‘George’. This can be worn to the Church, Market, Marriage ceremony, Burial ceremony, occasional village Town’s Meeting or while visiting a relative and a friend.
The woman buy’s this clothes herself and sometimes too the husband buys it for her. Wearing a wrapper and a beautiful blouse dignifies the woman and accords her respect, honour and love.

When a woman is advancing in years that she cannot be able to buy these clothes herself, the children buy it for her to show her love and respect. Sometimes too a family relative can present this type of cloth as a gift to the woman. It is a normal way of dressing in my town so every woman must have this type of cloth and wears them as occasion warrants and depending on where she is going to.

THE TOWN’S MEETING

This is a Meting of all the women in the village. Women gathers together periodically to discuss on different issues affecting them and the village. There are various women meetings for different age groups. The women Leader will start the discussion and other matters concerning the community will be discussed as they arise. Different attires and clothes are worn at this time usually the 'Plain George' cotton fabric is used.

We also have the 'August Meeting' for women in my Town, this is an annual congress that holds in the month of August. It is a massive home coming occasion whereby women who lives in other cities travels back home to their matrimonial village to meet other local women living in the village to discuss on issues concerning the village. Part of this meeting discussions also includes community developments, conflict issues and management. At this occasion we get to see friends and family members whom we have not seen for months. Love and care is usually displayed here. Everyone at the occasion is well dressed. Each day of the meeting comes with a different attire and outfit. These clothes the women wear were bought together as a group. The women contribute money monthly so as to foot the bill of each clothes. No one is left out as it is a joyous time for the women. The women also help the less privileged among them who cannot afford to buy those clothes. They give out clothes to them free so that everyone will be properly dressed.

In all dressing is part of life. We cannot do without clothing ourselves in a dignified manner.
