Hello ladies,

Today I’m going to talk about Srilanka’s traditional dress. There a big history behind this traditional dress. So I would like to share it with you in brief.

Traditional Kandyan saree is the traditional ladies dress in Srilanka. In prehistoric era Srilankan Veddas used leaves and branches as their dress. But with time when the British invaded Srilanka little by little the dress code changed into cotton wool clothes. During that time imports came into exist and using alchohol, silk clothes,consumption of wheat flour was prominent.

Srilanka had different kingdoms in different historic eras. Among those eras Kandyan Kingdom was very much prominent. The ladies traditional dress which is very much popular now was also introduced in this Kandyan era. Not everyone had the possibility of wearing the kandyan saree at that time. Only the married ladies of high class families wore the Kandyan saree. Those who were able to wear the Kandyan Saree were known as manike in the Kandyan Era.
At present girls wear this Traditional Kandyan Saree as the attire for the bride in their wedding ceremony. In many government and private sector companies employees are given the traditional Kandyan Saree as the uniform. As a teacher even I used to wear the Traditional Kandyan Saree to school. In Srilanka the uniform of a teacher is also a Saree. You may have noticed in Srilankan Airlines the uniform of Airhostesses is the Traditional Kandyan Saree. According to the company desires the saree design chages.

The price of a normal saree in Rs.750/= and according to the design and material it may vary upto Rs.50000/=.
The old traditional kandyan saree has undergone different modifications at present according to the new designs prevailing.
