Are you frustrated with your appearance? If you have the power to change, what physical features about yourself would you change? Does your mind often run with such thoughts like: “I hate the way I look”? Sometimes how you look at yourself can affect how you view yourself. Sometimes the focus point may be about your weight, or height, your features, or your skin colour.

A few months ago when I made my personal research, I discovered on one statistic that 83 percent of women and 74 percent of men feel disappointed with what they see when they stand before the mirror. So, if you do entertain some feeling of dislike about your look, just know that others too are facing this.

In human experience, these thoughts are universal. I have been there personally. While in Higher institution, most of my friends and colleagues were tall and muscular and that made me feel a bit disappointed about myself since I was the ‘short one’ in their midst, not like I am short physically, I am average. There is hardly any person anywhere who has never at least once had an “I hate the way I look” thought. The only difference is that the thought occurs with more severity in some than others and some people have been imprisoned by them even. Sometimes we spend so much time appreciating how beautiful and well-built others are that we neglect ourselves. To make matters worse, we get wrapped up and deeply engrossed in a certain standard of beauty that the social media, beauty, and slick magazines sold to us; making us believe that a certain ideal body exists when in reality there is nothing of such.

The idea that a certain perfect or ideal body exists is total nonsense. Such ideology makes us forget our own unique type of beauty and this can lead to problems with self-image and self-worth. At other times, our feelings of insecurity about our looks are rooted in more core negative views of ourselves. In a number of ways, some people have had rough or deprived upbringings that enrooted the belief that they are fundamentally flawed and unlovable, and that they don’t deserve and won’t get happiness. That thought of negative self-image can probably influence more specific areas. For example, such a person may become convinced that they are ugly and unattractive. Sincerely speaking, your appearance doesn’t define your worth.

The feeling of low self-worth and disappointment you feel about your look for the most part exists only in your head; others hardly notice those imperfections that you have been emphasizing in your head. Most folks who feel insecure are no doubt good-looking, but sadly, they refuse to see that. If you are having too many “I hate the way I look” thoughts, ask yourself: Am I letting these thoughts hold me back from what I want in life? If you are unfulfilled in any area of your life it is probably connected to your “I hate the way I look” thoughts. Certain behavioral patterns commonly show up in people who feel too insecure about their looks. They are: They struggle with food and exercise.

They either restrict or become unrestrained or cycle between both in the bid to get the ideal body. For many, this leads to serious health problems later in life like metabolic disorders, obesity, and depression. In the bid to seek validation to fill the gap their “I hate the way I look” thoughts created, they become attracted to negative influences and end up in relationships with folks and friends who don’t treat them according to their worth. They hold back from social situations. They avoid meeting new people because of their appearance.

If you are constantly struggling with feelings of disappointment because of your look, the following points can help you regain your self-worth. Throw away the media’s definition of beauty. Oh yes! It’s time to shake off that media objectified definition of beauty. You don’t need to consider yourself less. Remember, you are not going to change society’s definition of beauty, but you can change your own point of view. Instead of considering the media’s beauty standards, create your own definition and stick it. Whose ageless beauty do you admire? Think of friends and loved ones.
Did your mother or grandmother have a beautiful smile? Does your neighbor know how to rock a particular outfit? Is there an older woman in your neighborhood who seems just to glow with natural beauty from inside out? Set your sights and thoughts on these real-life instances of beauty. Take a deeper notice of the things that make these people truly beautiful that have nothing to do with society’s rules. Realize that everyone is beautiful.

While the media is fun of choosing to represent one image as the beauty ideal, this idea is initiated by fashion houses.
For one, many of the images, even if they feature naturally attractive people, are altered using photoshop or any other picture editor to portray a level of beauty no one could actually achieve, let alone sustain.
