This catchy hook for the story of the chipmunk, the wolf and the lion. And maybe the sheep, from a victim's point of view of course.
You know, this guy

My mom told me this story sometime in my childhood.
Here goes.

A shepherd would usually find out much too late that in spite of his great shepherding skills, he has lost some of his flock. He knew one of the predators, a lion. He didn't doubt that this predator could carry of three sheep without breaking a sweat but he knew also that it wasn't in the lion's nature to be too greedy. He wondered who the other thief was. He was right to suspect another for there were indeed two.

oh yeah the villain of this one

A Stealth wolf was the unknown thief. so one sunny afternoon, as the shepherd was taking his nap, the lion came and took his pick of the sheep. He had a craving for lamb that day. After a not too exciting hunt, how much fight could sheep put up, right? He had his dinner, licked his jowls and went off to sleep right in his dining spot. It must have been one of those drowsy afternoons cos the shepherd did not wake.

Time run and the lion and shepherd slept soundly on. The wolf appeared on the sleepy scene and when he saw the lion, he thought, “ yayyyyyy! If I manage to carry this big sheep away, I wouldn't have to stir from my den for weeks. It must have been his bad sight and his greed that saw as he did. It's anybody's guess. He quickly carried the lion away, thinking he had won the lottery. As he went on his senses returned to him and he managed to reason that no sheep could weigh this much. Of course, this vital sense came to him just in time for his ears to welcome a mighty roar. The wolf's heart rate spiked and his mind went blank. The lion didn't wake though, the roar was sleep-roaring. When the wolf realised this, his mind filled with strategies he could use to save his hide.

Just then, a meek cheery chipmunk met the wolf. He was carrying his own tiny load of dinner for the month. The wolf saw his chance. He said, “ my dear chipmunk, I've been carrying this load for miles and my next is going to break in the next minute if I don't get it down.”
“ I'll take it." Said the ever helpful chipmunk, throwing her own load in the bushes.
The wolf did not waste the chance, he swiftly put his load on the chipmunk's head and saying he had to relieve himself, took his leave.
The helpful chipmunk went on ahead. He hadn't gone ten metres when the lion woke.

When he saw the chipmunk, he thought, ‘ what is this? Dessert? Well who am I to refuse?'
At this time the wolf's conscience had surfaced and was giving him a tongue lashing for his evil deeds. He remorsefully decided to try and right his wrong so he run after the chipmunk and shouted, “ throw down the load, chipmunk! Throw down the load!”
“ whether you throw me down or not, I'll eat you up! whether you throw me down or not, I'll eat you up! " the lion boomed.
At this the chipmunk, threw the lion down and escaped into a handy hole but not before the lion clawed his back. And that is how the chipmunk has this stripes on his back. It turned out beautiful though.

This story thought me two free lessons.

  1. Know what you're going to carry before you haul it up.
  2. Sometimes you've got to say no. It's not selfish to help yourself first.
