1. SUICIDE
Did you know that many rape victims commit suicide as a result of their shame after being raped? Suicide is the act of killing oneself, and it is not uncommon to hear about people who have killed themselves, particularly women who have been raped. They don't care about their lives after their pride has been taken away because they will feel worthless. In olden Africa, a woman who is raped is considered a disgrace to her family, especially if she is not married. As a result, in order to save her family or father from embarrassment, such a woman may commit suicide. This is to demonstrate how severe the consequences of rape can be.
2. UNWANTED PREGNANCY
Rape once can result in pregnancy. If the victim lacks the physical and financial resources to support the pregnancy, it can lead to a slew of additional issues. Unwanted pregnancy can shatter the victim's academic and other life goals. Unwanted pregnancy will incur significant economic and other costs for the victims. It is critical to warn people about rape and educate them about it in order to reduce rape incidents in our society.
3. FEAR OF SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES OR INFECTIONS
There is also the possibility of having STDs from forced and unprotected sexual activities. Many victims of rape have been infected with sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS. That is why, if a victim falls victim, it is critical to seek medical attention as soon as possible so that proper treatment can be provided.
4. POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD)
Rape trauma can be extremely traumatizing and unpleasant for rape victims. Rape victims find it difficult to forget about the rape incident and may struggle to forget it. One of the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder is an inability to initiate sexual relations with those they truly love; their mind will always return to the rape incident they experienced previously, which may eventually cause them to fear being close or intimate with their loved ones. They are afraid of people, especially those of the opposite gender. In the worst-case scenario, some of them have intense hatred for the opposite gender and may disassociate or alienate themselves from others.
Rape may or may not be completely eradicated in society, but it can certainly be reduced with good preventive measures. Among the preventive measures are:
- Avoiding dangerous situations, such as walking alone in the dark or in a lonely place.
- Proper sex education and gender sensitization can help to reduce teen rape.
- Adults' inappropriate touches could teach our children about rape. Allow them to understand how they can be touched in ways that are considered appropriate and how they can be touched in ways that are not.
- Learn to dress appropriately and not indecently.
