The other day, we started to discuss about High Blood Pressure commonly known as hypertension. We discussed about the normal pressure of humans, the types of hypertension (The primary essential, secondary and malignant). We also learnt about the causes of hypertension, the prevention of hypertension. To add, we also discussed about the lifestyle modifications.
In today's entry, I would like to continue with you on Pharmacological Therapy. You would love every bit of it, so have patience and kindly peruse through this post. Before then, let us consider some other causes of hypertension, sign and symptoms of hypertension and treatment of hypertension.
Causes of Hypertension
- Lack of physical activity
- Aging
- Medicines such as birth control pills.
- Chronic kidney disease.
- Vitamin D deficiency
- Insufficient calcium, potassium and magnesium consumption.
Signs and symptoms of Hypertension
- Severe headaches
- Fatigue or confusion
- Dizziness
- Chest pains
- Fainting
- Palpitation
- Insomnia
- Nausea
- Problems with vision
- Breathing problems
Treatment of Hypertension
The main good treatment of hypertension is to lower blood pressure to less than 140/90 or lower in some groups such as people with diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Treatment of hypertension is important to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack and heart failure. High blood pressure may be treated medically, by changing lifestyle factors or a combination of the two ( that is , medically use the anti- hypertension drugs, dietary management, prevention and management)
Prevention and management of hypertension
Losing weight if overweight.
Quitting smoking
Diet control ( Eating healthy diet)
Reducing calcium intake.( Salt cubes, monosodium glutamates, koobi and salted fish, salt pettre, canned meat and fishes)
Exercising regularly
Get treatment early and regularly.
Reduce stress and relaxation therapy. Example medications and others.
Reduce intake of animal fat
Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables
There should be aimit or stop alcohol consumption.
Pharmacological Therapy
Various groups of drugs are used to treat hypertension. Collectively, these drugs are called as anti- hypertensive which include:
Diuretics : Diuretics help the kidneys to suppress the sodium reabsorption in the distod convoluted tubules. Example: chlorothiazide, furosemide.
Beta blockers : These medications reduce the workload of the heart and blood vessel and it also cause the heart to beat slowly and doesn't beat with force. Example: atendol, propanol
Alpha blockers: These medications cause the peripheral vasodilation blood vessels. Example: prazosin.
Vasodilators : These medications acting directly on the muscle in the wall of arteries and preventing the muscles from tightening and arteries from narrowing.
Example: Nitroglycerin, Sodium nitro prusside.Calcium Channel Blockers: Calcium Channel Blockers are medicines that block the movement of extra cellular calcium.
PREVENTION
Get treatment early and regularly.
Reduce stress with relaxation therapy.
Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.
Losing weight if overweight.
Quitting smoking
Limit or stop alcohol consumption.
Dietary Management
Reduce salt intake
Eat more fruit and vegetables
High potassium diet (eat)
Eat more whole grain foods, fish and nut.
Reduce high intake of fat and cholesterol.
