Learn something about coconut 🥥

I'm beginning to get more and more interested in knowing the health benefits of our everyday fruits or plants.
The last time, I talked about the soursop plant, it's uses and how they can affect the human system if not taken in the right doses.
I'm gonna talk a little about coconuts today😊.
The coconut plant 🪴coconut 🥥 like we all know is very common around the world and famous for its wonderful fruit. The fruit has many benefits aside the refreshing taste of the meat and water in it.
I'm not really a fan of coconuts, they make me wanna puke after eating(especially the hard ones) and amongst all the foods I know, coconut is the only one I know to detest, but I drink the water in it sometimes.

What we should know is, the coconut plant has more to offer than just giving us nice food to eat. Almost all the parts of the coconut are useful both to our health and to other domestic activities of our everyday life.
I'm gonna take the parts of the coconut, from the fruit(meat, water), the leaves, the husk and the roots and explain their importance and health benefits and I hope you find them useful and make you love coconut 🥥 even more.

The Fruit 🥥🌴

The fruit


The fruit of the coconut plant is what we are usually after. It contains the flesh or the meat which is white and the water in it.

  • the meat: the coconut flesh is very rich in proteins, carbs, fat, sugar, fibre(for easy bowel movement), manganese, selenium, etc. So basically, the flesh of the coconut when eaten contains a lot of essential nutrients for the human body.
    Eating coconut may boost the heart's health, support weight loss, aid the digestive system because of the fibre in it and also stabilise blood sugar. The coconut flesh can either be eaten in its natural form or can be made into coconut milk by blending the meat and simmering in hot water and straining the milk from it. There won't be any fibre in this but it can be a substitute for milk which is great..

And oh, the coconut meat can also be made into coconut oil which can be used in cooking and also applied on the skin as a pomade, it's good 👍.

  • coconut water:
    Coconut water can be very refreshing especially after an exercise or when you're really thirsty.
    Studies have shown that the water inside the coconut is full of electrolytes like potassium, sodium and magnesium.

Some importance of the coconut water are that, it aids in hydration which is pretty understandable. It prevents kidney stones and it also gives a healthier skin.

  • The husk
    This might come as a surprise but I've witnessed this personally, in my home. My mum sometimes boils the husk and drinks the brew..it tastes normal, just like any tea you can get.
    The main reason she was doing that was to prevent and cure ulcer. I later got to know that the coconut husk does cure or prevent all sorts of stomach ulcers. But like I said for the soursop, this isn't proven scientifically worldwide but it works for people.

Other importance of the coconut husk tea are prevention and curing of kidney stones, curing gonorrhoea, curing tuberculosis, asthma and all whole lot more. The traditional people know more about this 😉.

The Leaves

The leaves of the coconut plant is also very important. The frond is used for making roofing of huts for storage. This is usually done in remote places for storing harvested crops like yam, corn or wheat.

Aside this importance, the leaves can be used to make brooms for sweeping. This can be done by taking off the excess parts of the individual leaves from their midribs. The midribs are the ones that collectively form the broom.

The Roots

The roots of the plant just like the other parts also have their own health benefits to the human system. I remember when I was very young, a man used to come for some of the roots of our coconut, I didn't really get why. Probably he was some traditional medicine man of some sort, I don't know but I do hope it worked wonders for whatever he used the roots for. Some boil them before drinking the brew or just eating them raw after washing.
I've had the opportunity to read about the benefits now and some of the known ones are;

  • Treating gall bladder
  • Treating urinary infections(like warts and chlamydia) and kidney related diseases.
  • toxin removal
  • relieving toothache. This can be done by boiling the roots and then gargling with the water.

Conclusion

The coconut plant is undoubtedly a great one and has many benefits. When looked at very carefully, it seems that all of its parts are useful to the human being and this makes it even more amazing.
However, since everything has it's own bad sides, the coconut also has its own side effects if not carefully used. Very high doses of the coconut water can cause excessive amount of potassium in the blood which can cause a lot of problems for the human body. Coconut can cause allergies and nausea if taken more than required.
