Hi everyone, Hope we are all doing great today?

I am about to take us all on public health tour for the next couple of days or weeks so to speak. I entreat each and every one of us to pick at least one or two lessons from this series for you may not know the time or place that you may require first aid knowledge to save a life.

Birds have feathers to fly instantaneously when faced with emergencies. Fishes have fins that make them escape dangers, rodents have sharp claws to dig and escape predators but we humans despite our complex nature, appear more vulnerable in the face of danger, accident, or emergencies. Having the knowledge of first aid will give us an upper hand when faced with these insults.

WHAT IS FIRST AID?

First aid is the initial or temporary response given to a situation that threatens an individual's life. That individual may be yourself, a friend, relative, or a total stranger.
First aid can also be explained as the first help you give to a victim of an accident using materials around even before an ambulance arrives or he or she is sent to the hospital.

FAINTING (SYNCOPE)

For today, I will elaborate more on what fainting is and what we can do when someone faints around us.
Do we just stand and watch whiles the person dies or should we help?

Fainting is the temporary loss of consciousness due to inadequate oxygenated blood supply to the brain. When the air inside the brain is not plenty and blood itself is reduced, that is what can cause fainting

Causes Of Fainting

  • Lack of fresh air
  • Overcrowded area
  • Smoking

Signs And Symptoms

Look out for these signs. If you see any, the person is likely to faint.

  • Dizziness
  • General weakness
  • Shallow breath
  • Sweating profusely all over the body
  • Pale face and cold skin

How To Manage people Who have fainted

  • Relax the body by lying them down flat
  • If the person is sitting, put the head in between the thighs for few minutes
  • Ensure that the airway is clear and the victim is still breathing
  • Raise the legs above the heart level to increase the flow of blood to the brain.
  • Seek emergency medical aid
  • Remember to loosen any tight dress that suffocates the person
  • Turn the victim's head to the side so the tongue doesn't fall back into the throat.
  • Don't shake a person who just fainted

I hope we have been able to learn a thing or two.
Let's anticipate for the next one on; CHOKING .
