The monster that makes midnight croaks in swampy locations is the subject of this piece. This species is known as a frog, however this page will focus on the anatomy of the bullfrog specifically.

According to their biological taxonomy, the bullfrog belongs to the kingdom Animalia, phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class amphibia, order Anura, family Ranidae, and genus Rana. The American bullfrog has a large eardrum, a broad mouth, a squat body, long limbs, webbed hind feet, and a squat body.

With a shorter, reinforced spinal column and robust thigh muscles, the adult bullfrog's skeleton and muscles are equipped for high leaping on land. In adult bullfrogs, vision, taste, smell, and hearing are all vital. Eyelids and an air-filled middle ear with movable bones to magnify sounds are adaptations for perceiving in air.

Because the lungs are used for breathing, the circulatory system has been altered to keep oxygen-rich blood distinct from oxygen-poor blood. The digestive system of an adult bullfrog is designed for meat, but the digestive system of a larva is designed for plant food. The female deposits her eggs in water, while the male fertilizes them externally. Tadpole larvae, which have evolved to live in water, go through a metamorphosis to become air-breathing adults.

In its geographic area, the North American bullfrog is the largest frog. Lakes, ponds, and slow-moving streams are all home to the frog. It's a sit-and-wait predator with a ferocious appetite who eats anything from insects to earthworms to snakes and voles.
