A TRIP TO PUNGU DAM/RESERVIOR IN THE UPPER EAST REGION- 19th July, 2021

in Steem Ghana3 years ago (edited)

Hello Everyone,

We embarked on an educational trip today to the Pungu Dam which is located at Navrongo, Upper East region of Ghana. Following our study on Catch Hydrology and Environmental Modelling, thus it was required of us to experience the phenomenon in real-time.

The dam serves mainly as a reservoir for irrigation farming during the dry seasons. In the Upper East Region, the rainy season begins in June and at its peak in August with little to no showers in October and November.

As the dry season sets in, farmers depend on the dam for water to irrigate their farms. Once the demand exceeds the stored capacity without any new inputs, the dam tends to dry up completely in early February.

The reservoir usually reaches its peak storage in August. The excess water goes through the spillway as river flow and joins the Pungu River downstream. Currently, the reservoir is in bad condition due to a lack of maintenance and inappropriate farming practices.

The area around the reservoir has been encroached by farmers which has rendered the soil around the reservoir lose. This has contributed to silting of the reservoir besides the introduction of nutrients into it causing eutrophication. Silting has reduced the storage capacity of the reservoir.

On our way back, we passed by the Pungu Solar Power Plant which is managed by the Volta River Authority. The plant is estimated to generate about 3MW of electricity added to the national grid and covers about 4 football fields.
Unfortunately, we could not get access to tour the facility since it was on a pre-notice basis.

You are welcome @pandev

I really enjoyed reading your write up. Thanks for the education. Just a quick one I noticed from your write up was there were a few spelling errors. I guess it was a typo. Overall that was a good write up.

One village one dam agenda right?

This particular area has several dams because of the short rainy period.

I think I need to start visiting all these places. I feel reluctant to not even where the crocodiles at😅

Same here, this is my first trip ever since I stepped foot here

Glad you had this wonderful moment out there learning and taken the time to educate us too. Wouldn't it be a good idea for them to expand on the solar project to capture more fields? Beautiful shots.

That is all up to the managers of the facility and their resources
