Leadership is not about you working alone on behalf of a group or running the affairs on behalf of others to attain a certain goal. A good leader doesn't work alone but rather work hand in hand with the followers to achieve an ultimate goal.

Before one is picked a leader there are certain things that one has to consider before been called to be a leader and after which one is chosen there are certain qualities one has to posses to be called a good leader.
A leader is one who is chosen by the people or the opinion followers to be guided.
To be a good leader one has to posses the following qualities;

1. Self awareness and prioritize personal development.

Effective Leaders focus on developing their emotional intelligence, good says. Leader that work to refine this qualities are more adaptive, resilient and accepting of feedback from others. They are also effective listeners and open to change.
To improve on this quality on has to set goals, prioritize goals and take responsibility for accomplishing them. Also, take responsibility for falling short of your stated goals or making mistakes along the way. Successful leaders focus on the big picture, avoid distractions and don't get bogged down by small, tactical details

2. Focus on developing others.

This qualities build on the principles of the situational leadership theory, which suggest that effective Leaders adopt to whether an individual or group is ready, willing, and able to take specific actions.
The ability to delegate. Delegation is one of the core responsibilities of a leader, but it can sometimes be tricky to delegate effectively. In order to delegate one has to develop and build trust with your team.

3. Communication.

As a leader you need to be able to communicate in a variety of ways from transmission of information to assisting your people. One must be able to communicate across a wide range of people, role and if possible identities. The quality and effectiveness of communication across your group directly affect the success of your goal.

4. Ability to influence.

The ability to influence people is also one of the characteristics of a good leader. Being able to convince people through logical, emotional, or cooperative appeals is a component of being an inspiring, effective Leader.
It requires emotional intelligence and trust.

5. Courage and Respect.

It can be hard to speak up to people or at work, whether you want to voice a new idea, provide feedback to a direct report. That's part of the reason why one has to be courageous.
Respect is reciprocal. We give respect to gain respect no matter your status in a society. Treating people with respect on a daily basis is one of the most important thing a leader can do. It helps ease or result conflict, create trust, and improve effectiveness.

With all these qualities mentioned above one has to posses all these before you can be called a good leader. Being confident, courageous and respectful, selfawareness, good communication and a lot more one can think of.
