The importance of free speech
When it comes to twitter and Facebook taking things down because it personally offended them that doesn’t give room for growth. Let’s say for example we are back in 1700 it would be considered offensive to say you are gay or that women were equal etc. The majority vote back then would be that if was offensive hate speech and to be killed or imprisoned for even suggesting such a thing. If we want to evolve as a society we absolutely have to allow free speech even if it’s offensive to us else we become like 1984 eventually where only one opinion rules and everything else is worthy of death. Do you really want to protect your own precious feelings at the expense of society evolving and new thought forms being processed?
Absolutely right. Except for one point: if we go back in history even further than 1700, say to pre-Christian, pre-Jewish and pre-Muslim times, these supposed taboos were not yet taboos. In fact, in societies that were only slightly developed, people were partly freer in their views and tolerances than they are today....
Very true, in essence it’s just each period that seems to make various speech trendy and other taboo and everyone falls in line and polices it even for them by attacking anyone with an opinion that’s different.
Speak on it sister! Without free speech, the world becomes a pretty terrible place. And the fact these are US companies...with our 1st Amendment...annoys me.
