Someone asked me about the roundheads and the cavelliers. Now I had to learn something myself here which, is always useful. The Cavaliers were the people who followed the king and the name meant 'gallant gentleman' - as of course thats what you were labelled for following the king in those days irrespective of what the King believed in. The Roundheads, aka the Parliamentarians fought against the King and his supporters. They believed Parliament should have control over executive administration rather than the King having 100 percent control by divine birthright. The name came from their tendency to crop their hair close to their heads rather than having it long and flowing, as the cavaliers tended to.
In relation to Corfe Castle, it first got a visit from the Roundheads in May 1643 when 40 sailors approached, demanding entry to the castle and the surrender of its four guns. The lady of the Castle ordered a single canon shot to be fired and it sent the Round heads scurrying. However, they were to be back with 500 men, led by Sir Walter Erle, but again the castles defences held them at bay.
In June 1645 the Castle finally fell to the Roundheads, due to a turncoat officer opening a sally port to a party of enemy musketeers disguised as Royalist Cavaliers. They did end up giving the Lady of the Castle the keys back to the Castle due the resolve she had put up, but shortly after it was set alight with gunpowder leaving it in the ruins that it still exists in today.
Just one of the amazing views from the castle.
Giving the vibe of ancient civilization
