The World of XPILAR - B&W PHOTOGRAPHY AND ART CONTEST WEEK #084 ~ The Old Streets Of The Old Town

This is my entry for B&W photography and art contest hosted by @axeman.

These streets are really old if we take into account that Šibenik is the largest Croatian coastal town and it was first mentioned in 1066 in one of the charters of the Croatian king Petar Krešimir.

It is fascinating how much effort and stone was spent in building these old streets. In the 12th century, these streets were located within large walls where they were built around the old town to defend against the enemy.

Mostly these streets lead to the sea, as this was the last option if the city fell under siege.
People and the army would board at the ships and in the worst case they would leave the city.

The fortress is located approximately seventy meters from the sea.

This painting is carved in wood and shows the town of Šibenik (Sibeniko) from the 16th century and the painting shows a passage leading directly from the fortress to the sea.

Today it looks like this;

The plan of the city administration is to build a moving scale (escalator) on this place, which would connect the coast with the fortress of St. Michael, which has been completely restored and turned into a unique open summer stage.

I will write a special post about that fortress as it deserves.
