Innocent Prisoner

Alberto Jose, a prisoner locked in a special cell in Colombia's Bogota Jail, was feeling very restless today.

José had neither been able to sleep properly last night, nor had he had breakfast in the morning, nor had he read the newspaper.

José had been locked up in this jail as an under trail prisoner for the past 2 years in a robbery and murder case. Yesterday Jose's lawyer had told him that the court had given a verdict against him and he was sentenced to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment.

After hearing this news he had neither eaten nor drunk anything since then and was just imagining his dark future.

Jose knew that he had not committed these crimes, rather a police officer had framed him in this case by hatching a conspiracy. Jose was a simple and poor man. Jose worked as a clerk cum cashier in a transport company. More than 100 trucks used to ply in this transport company, hence there was a lot of money in the safe there. Jose was the incharge of this safe.

Two years ago, some masked goons had robbed the company at 8 in the night. Unfortunately, Jose was also in the office to finish some work. At the time of the robbery, only he and a company guard were in the office.

The robbers shot the guard as soon as they entered the office and snatched the keys of the safe from him and made him unconscious by making him smell some intoxicating substance. Then the robbers stole all the money from the safe and ran away.

When Jose regained consciousness, he was in police custody and the police recovered the pistol used in the murder, Jose's fingerprints were found on this pistol.

The police theory was that Jose had carried out the robbery with the help of one of his accomplices and his accomplice had fled with all the money.

Poor Jose told the police and the judge several times that he was innocent, but no one believed him, and now he will have to serve 13 years in jail without committing any crime.

His lawyer told him that the investigating officer of his case, the police inspector, had taken bribe from the real criminals, so he forcibly implicated him in this case.

Poor Jose begged all the officers to save himself, begged them, cried, swore on his honesty, his neighbours also testified in his case but no one listened to him.

All his savings were spent in fighting this case and proving himself innocent, his wife and flower-like 4-year-old daughter were on the verge of starvation.

Now he was thinking what will happen to his wife and his daughter, how will they feed themselves, how will they live.

He felt that the life of an honest and poor person had no place in this world.

At last he left his fate to God and started praying to God to make him rich in his next life and also prayed to God to protect his family.
