Usually we see tall palm trees with the bunch of leaves on the top. When you mentioned dates I immediately recalled delicious and sweet dates that we normally eat. But if there only hard ones that is no wonder that kids using them to throw, might be painful if you got it.

These are really neat trees for landscaping. You can put them somewhere and they only get about 10 feet tall after years and years. Smart landscapers put them with the tall kind and it makes for a nice look.
All the palm trees have seed/fruit but most of them aren't edible. They just make a big mess under the tree lol.
